Socoder -> Off Topic -> VirginMedia SpeedBoost - Finally..

During the Olympics, VirginMedia have been offering a free "Permanent-ish" Speed Boost.
Since I'm currently on 30Mbps, the free upgrade took you up to 70Mbps.
So, obviously, I clicked it the first chance I had.

.. Two weeks ago.
....

Today, I had to bloody well ring them up, and chatted with Broadband support for a while, before he said "No, you should be ringing customer services", baffled by my inexperience in the world of the crazy maze of phone button menu things.
*tsk*
He passed me over to them, and they managed to click a button at their end, which pretty much instantly increased my broadband.

I'm now on 70Mbps. I'm currently getting 50Mbps in SpeedTest tests, but I imagine that's down to how shit the wifi is, more than the actual connection. I'll need to drag out an ethernet cable to find out for sure!

On the plus side, my upload speed's increased from 2Mbps to 5Mbps, which will be great for uploading future ALChoons

*Permanent-ish.. Apparently the speed-boost stays until you change your package. Folk over on Cable Forum seem to be suggesting that any package change means the speed reverts to it's original speed.

Earlier this year I requested a new modem which came with a update to the new vdsl technology. My upload speed is the same as my download speed now. I can upload a 4mb mp3 in two seconds now. Will be great when I upload large youtube video's. Also for cloud storage this is great.

It is great how the science people are improving things.

Yeah, as good and stable as my broadband is, VirginMedia's always had a terribly slow upload, compared to its download.

But I wouldn't switch it for anything else.
I sure as hell aren't going to rely on a 40 year old copper-or-whatever-based BT line to handle my internet!!!
And 5mbps's nice to have!!! Yum yum yum!!!

As predicted, it's my wifi.
If I have both the laptop and the iPad active at once, I get 50mbps.
If I shut the laptop down, I get 70 on the iPad.

*shrugs*
