I absolutely love the current trend on the internet where people are engaging in reconstructing their favourite games from scratch as open source projects.
This one is for Morrowind, 2002's game of the year.

Not sure I see the point, its just the same game but redone?

and you need to use the content from the original game anyway, may as well just install that!

This, and the sourcecode (read: algorithms) are liberated!
The people working on it learn, and the people looking at the source learn. A lot of the algorithms used in these professional games can be reused (unless they're very specific and copyrighted, in which case it is usually known), which saves people having to invent new algorithms for archiving files, compressing files, or rendering stuff!
