Socoder -> Monkey -> Cerberus X - the continuation of Monkey X

Dear all,

the Monkey site will probably close pretty soon (possibly by the end of June). Mark thankfully set Monkey X completely to open source so we took the opportunity to set up a page to continue maintaining and developing Monkey X under the new name Cerberus X.

Cerberus X runs under the same license as Monkey X, so it's open source and completely free. We are very addicted to this fantastic language and toolset. We use it for our own projects as well. There is simply nothing better out there when it comes to light weight(!) cross platform 2d game development.

So here's the link to our new home: https://www.cerberus-x.com

At the moment it's still somehow an empty space but with that is going to change! We kind of "rush" into this because the Monkey page will be gone forever soon. We will introduce own binaries, tutorials, documentation a roadmap and all that stuff soon.

Thanks for reading, have a fantastic day!

Oh and by the way: Do NOT feel forced to register there or even think that we want to split up this great community here! That is NOT our intention. This is just for information purpose.

It's nice that Monkey will continue, as are Blitz3D and Max, apparently.
I shan't be switching to anything like that, however.
My current Monkey-X devkit is still working admirably, but I've previously suggested to Mark that, should I ever need to replace it for some reason, that Monkey2 will more than likely be the replacement I go for.

I dipped my toes in, at the start of this year, but found it somewhat slow when compiling. In the interim, however, Mark's been showing off Physics demos and 3D tests, and .. Ooooh, imagine what that could do to AGameAWeek!?

Yeah, if I'm going to move to anything, it'll be that.
For now, my devkit is "Strong and Stable", and that's exactly where it's staying.

Good luck, though!
I'll stick a link in the DevTools list for you.

One complaint..
FFS, could you not have picked a more happy and jolly name/icon for the thing?!
Sounds and looks like the world's most evil language!
I certainly won't be putting that name/logo into my games.

Thanks! I agree and hope that MX2 will rock the indie dev world. Mark deserves it!

Regarding the name, well... that was a tough decision and discussion but yeah I get what you mean. Hydra was another candidate but Cerberus made it even though a hell hound might not family friendly, eh?

I still like and use the Flash Target. I noticed in this new language it is not mentioned?

I don't like the name either.

//
What do you code in?

Cerberus-X.

Wait a minute.... sir... berry... sex... what??

No.... Cerberus... then a letter X.
//
Can see that coversation getting old very quickly. And yeah the logo is way too menacing.

Flash will continue to work! Forgot about that. It's somehow dead.

The Logo is menacing? Seriously?

The name is questionable like always of course. X stands for cross platform and the domain without was gone, so...

Not just the logo, the whole Cerberus thing. I'm not sure why you'd want to name a programming language after a savage, supernatural dog. It just doesn't fit. YMMV.

It's cool that Monkey will live on, but yeah, if I were to rename the project, I would keep it monkey themed, not mythical dog themed. But that's just me.

PS. Does Monkey do native UI elements such as buttons and text boxes etc.?

Check out my excellent homepage!

IIRC, BlitzMax is the last of Mark's to include any GUI stuff. It'd be hard with all the different Monkey targets.
.. Might be wrong, though!

Cant please everyone with the naming of products as Mark knows!

Do people actually like the names of the latest "new" languages such as Apple's Swift, Google's Go and Dart, JetBrain's Kotlin etc? All sounds pretty crap to me... Even the older ones arnt good really, Java, PHP, C etc.

I actually suggested Cerberus along with Chimera as Hydra is already taken. IMO at least they sound "cool".

Something to get your teeth stuck into!

I'm not that keen adding the "X" to Cerberus, but I understand why its added to make it more unique.

Cockatrice!

I do like the logo even if the name is a mouthful.

All the raw, animal magnetism of a rutabaga.

Nah, still not a fan of that name.
Evil dogs don't suit the typical AGameAWeek style!!

@Jayenkai - some cracking monkeys there.

On the Monkey-X front, I'm still happily compiling and coding within the HTML5 target, bloody amazing what can be achieved within a web browser these days to be frank.

My coding time is going down somewhat at the mo, other life stuff happening eating up time - in a good way.

Will be sad to see the Monkey-X site go too, jeez, I thought that'd at least last as long as BlitzBasic before they took it down.

Happy coding!

Alright, first release of Cerberus is there.

Basically it's like the latest Monkey version but I've changed to latest GLFW 3.3 (because under Mac OS Sierra, GLFW apps did not start anymore due to a GLFW bug) and did some minor fixes.
