Socoder -> Off Topic -> Forum Ideas

I had two forum ideas, and rather than pollute a different topic I decided to create another one.

1. Splitting Topics

We keep having topics that evolve in to other topics. It would be cool if the admins could split a topic in to two when this happens.

2. Post Ratings

Whenever you make a post, you would have a checkbox that would turn the post rating on or off. The purpose would be for people to rate an idea of yours in your post. So, in my case, my theme engine idea would have had a rating on my post. A thumbs up or down. The idea is simple, a thumbs up is +1 and a thumbs down is -1. This would eliminate stupid polls and be a good way to get feedback.

Anybody else have other ideas?

Splitting, merging, etc was high on my priorities when I started all this. Mudchat has the ability to transfer to topics, comments can be tweaked into topics, and things like that.
But.. So far I don't think we've ever really needed it.. So, as possible as it is, there's no big "And now, do this!" button anywhere, for admin or otherwise.
I kinda figured that would be a "When we get a bit bigger" type of thing.

*shrugs*

Post rating would probably be used as much as comment/item ratings, ie, not that much.. I think DD's "tags" idea would probably work alongside this, though..
.. Still gotta do those tags..
.. and the todo lists!

1) I think that could be useful, as well as the ability to move forum topics into the links section (which I've wanted to do several times).
2) I think that real textual motivations/explanations are far better feedback than a number ever will be.

Actually, there are two search options already. But I'll be honest and say that the Google one is cheap and the one you find on the fourm page is awful.

The one on the Forum page does bog-standard "Find this word!" stuff, but you can also filter it by user..
Handy..? Ish. Does the job? Ish..

Other websites tend to minimise search using X searches per X mins, and things like that, so I assume they're very CPU Intensive.. I put the Basic-search to help test it out, and so far either it's not that intensive.. .. or folk aren't using it
..
My guess is it's the second

Whereas I KNOW that email notification does tend to slow things down. Someone (?) mentioned a background mailer, and I've yet to sort that out. Having said that, there's RSS Feeds. Use Google Alerts, and/or Reader, Twitter, heck, even facebook, or other handy tools.. You can set those up with the RSS Feeds, and have yourself all manner of little emailed/embedded updates. And, in all honesty, it'd save server load! Use the internet!! The internet is your friend!! There's data in them thar rss's!!

How about a user rating? so people could +/- you're helpfulness or whatever? obviously with some sort of time limit, so you cant just sit and '-' someone over and over.

I've never really liked the whole "Karma" thing...

It typically leads to idiots voting for their idiot mates, and then all ganging and downvoting people that they happen to have had a quarrel with, but that has zero relevance on the forum.

I agree, I don't see much point in up/down rating posts. I mean why do you need to?

I like topic splitting in theory, i.e. that a topic can diverge off into two directions, but on other sites in practice this leads to a big tree of posts and you have very little idea how to go through it.

Maybe if the interface was done better, for example only allow splits to be added after an existing post so a post can only split into two topics (which can then split again). This means you don't have one post splitting into say 8 different topics.

Also if navigation was still a linear view like the current system but where there is a split it says 'do you want to go left to Jay's post or right to Afro's?' kinda thing.

For me the interface to topic splitting is the key factor, otherwise I'm all for it.
