It's been a good few weeks since I changed them, and luckily nobody's ranted about them. (Although, DD did moan about them in a PM, the other day!)
Having had plenty of time to get used to them, I think we oughta be able to give honest opinions.

Do they stay, do we return to the old style, or can anyone come up with anything better?!

What do you like/hate about the new blue-ball buttons, and how much do you want to punch me in the face for that fugly URL button?!

I did notice the change a few weeks ago, but wasn't sure how long they'd been in without me noticing!

The buttons themselves seem fine. |moan| My one complaint would be that there is plenty more BBCode available that doesn't have a button to represent it |moan| (this is something I remember noticing when writing my maths articles, but I can't off the top of my head remember which tags were missing |edit| except that one |edit|).

I'm fine with them, although I tend to just enter BB code manually. I'm not sure what they all do/are tbh, but the majority are obvious and at least there's floating info.

There's WAY more BBCode, but I got bored drawing them all, and figured it better to test the water first before attempting any more.
I might add a few more, if we're all happy enough with the style?

Spoiler, moan, rant are obvious ones to add..

The different types of image tag too (I'm thinking thumbnails).

I did tweak the img button to be IMGS, but thought having a thumb button might be too tricky to explain in the span of a simple button!!

Thumb takes the image URL, removes the extension, adds _thumb, then puts the extension back on again.
It's not exactly easy to explain, so I've pretty much just left that as a "power" function..

Similarly, we have a way to tabinate a post, as well as ways to make things appear when hovering over links, but again those aren't exactly easy to explain via a simple button, and .. Really.. They've barely ever been used!!

Perhaps have an article somewhere documenting all of the available BBCode, including the power functions? I wasn't even aware those last few existed, which may partly explain why they so rarely get used.

|edit| The heading tags are another missing button set that spring to mind. |edit|

I added the tabbing ability a number of years ago, when I was working on overhauling the Newsletter.
What better way to keep it all neatly organised, than to somehow paginate the newsletter into neat little sections!?

...
In theory, seemed like a good idea.
In practice, why the hell would I make the reader have to click through each section like that?!
WTF was I thinking!!?!?
I scrapped it fairly early into development, but the BBCode's still in here, and.... um.. Does the Javascript still support it!?! Only one way to find out!!

What new buttons?

:3

Although adding a HTML title tag might be helpful to explain what each does.

Quick smilies would be nice...

Really!?

You need smiley buttons!?

No, but we also don't NEED the other buttons either

Buttons are handy on touchscreens. Smiley buttons are fucking lazy!!!

(I did that smiley on my iPad!!!)

Added smileys and posted an "Advanced BBCode" thing, for those who aren't too scared to give that sort of thing a go!
Tomorrow I'll set about making some extra buttons, and maybe making something for that [url] button that doesn't look like arse!!!

The text descriptions for the Smilies are good.

BTW Have I done something to piss you off Jay?

I think I'll refrain from offering suggestions or pretty much anything else from now on.

Nah, I just hate how some websites have a bucketload of smiley buttons, so much that it kills iOS safari's memory and causes a random crash.
Visit TIGSource if you want an example of that...

Extra effort, but a CSS sprite sheet is the way to go. Stuff it all into one image, and use CSS background-position to pick the right one.

Considered, but wasn't in the mood at the time. I'd already spent a good hour or so doodling the seperate .png, uploading and testing bit by bit, and then went "hmm, I could do that CSS thing that Google does...." But by that time I really couldn't be arsed redoing it all again!

Since I've got more buttons to add, though, I might have a play with that.. Depends on whether or not I'm in the right mindset, I guess!!

I wanna smiley for when we have a lightbulb moment.

|edit| A small bulb for something that just pops in there, a medium one for when a bit of thinking went into the moment, and a big shiny bulb for when we have a proper geeky brainfarting thought. |edit|

@rockford:

Jay just has a lot to deal with lately, I very much doubt that he's actually pissed off with you.

I posted about them some time ago Jay. They look great. It makes the site more appealing visually.

I am aware of that, it just wasn't the first time the response seemed narky at one of my posts. I'd much rather know than not, if you know what I mean.

A little more standardisation, today, as the GardenBar is stripped away, and replaced with more of the simple button style things.
If anyone has any tips for linking to MSN/AIM/Yahoo/GoogleChat profiles, that'd be handy.. ICQ works.. Which is fucked up given that it's the oldest of the bunch!
I've also added skype, but am unsure if I should be typing my username or email addy into it. .. Never use Skype, so I don't think it matters!

For Twitter, Facebook and Steam, place your username. Not sure what to do if you don't have a quick and easy facebook link.. Will have to fiddle about with that, I think.

Apologies for lack of "Per-Theme" stylings.
As I continue to tweak/poke/prod this stuff, it's becoming more apparent that a single-theme site is fucktons easier to manage than trying to rejig one little thing over a dozen times, because you've got so many bloody themes. grrr!!

|update| In addition, if anyone has anything else I should add to either the GardenBar or the BBCode Buttons, let me know.. |update|

Oops.. Might've overdone it on the width, there!! It's messed up on my iPad. Will have to tweak it later..

On the topic. When you edit your profile, the box above the "Current Password" bit always auto-fills my username because Chrome thinks its a username box.

It did that before the updates -- I just figure now is a good time to complain!
