Um, the DMCA makes you a felon if you hold left shift when you put one of Sony's rootkit-infested CDs in your CD-ROM drive.
It is BAD legislation and nothing but.

I understand it's in place to protect software developers from being slapped around by piracy, but the methods and measures people are going to are overwhelming and detrimental. I guess i should reword it from fuck the dmca to 'stop being stupid, software companies!' Find ways to keep your stuff secure without being so intrusive / fickle so we don't need government agencies breathing down our necks, jumping at ghosts every time something goes wrong and someone appears to be pirating software.

PS: I have 2 violations that turned into court cases involving the DMCA, and both i have won due to the fact of the little text these idiots failed to read saying I am allowed backups of my things. But that's a story for another day.

I agree with Mog and 9572AD here.
Actually, I feel that morale is the big issue that keeps ticking people off with Spore's DRM.
I mean... take MMO games. People know that when they are buying an MMO client, they are essentially 'renting' the game, risking that it's server will be shut down in the future, without someone ever bothering to make an emulator.
Heck, it just happened to The Sims Online!
So why are people complaining about Spore? If the servers get shut down for some reason, you won't be able to reregister your copy of Spore, or download other people's creatures.
But if that happens, just download a bloody crack for it!
Don't be such a retard as to say 'Oh noes, EA shut their servers down... I don't wanna download a crack because I don't wanna be teh evil pirate!!!11'

Spore servers have nothing to do with the issue. Spore can be played completely offline.

Exactly my point.
Why are people complaining that they might not be able to reregister the game in the future?
Download a crack - issue solved!

Edit: Note that there's a distinct difference between EA's registration servers and the 'Sporepedia' server.
True, if EA denies you a re-registration even if you legally bought the game, you won't be able to use the 'Sporepedia' server anymore... but it's not that big of a deal. Maxis has thousands of creatures already shipped with the game, and by the time you might be required to call EA to re-register the game, you've probably already downloaded thousand more. So if EA says you can't re-register the game, just say 'Fuck you' and download a crack. Issue solved.

Exactly what afr0 just said - seems either way, you're boned, so why not just go ahead when the time comes and use a crack? it's not like you're missing out anything.

Or is the issue here that we shouldn't HAVE to crack it?

We shouldn't HAVE to. The point is that companies shouldn't be assholes to the people that pay them. We shouldn't have to find ways around stupid restrictions. Publishers should know from past experience that these types of things do not slow down piracy whatsoever. Why bother? Why punish the honest people.

I agree with it's punishing the honest, putting all of these barriers up only further drives people to want to crack said software. But it seems the only way to keep things in check is to be overbearing, sadly enough.

Has any game on STEAM been circumvented? I've always wondered that...

I think those games that have have been VAC banned, if they're online. Also, I think I read somewhere on their website that they ban accounts that use unauthorised, invalid, or already in use Keys.

And we now have proof! Piracy is not the issue as we and lots of others have stated!
