Well I know its been a while. And dont think I have forgot about you guys. I am subscribed to the news letter and read it every week. At any rate the past 2 weeks I have been digging up my old Atari 800XL (home computer, not game system, a lot of peeps dont know atari actually made a computer!) and getting back into my roots. I still have my 800xl, my fathers 800xl, and an 800xl I bought on ebay some years ago, plus diskette drives and all my software, carts and joysticks. At any rate I have been using an emulator as I cant seem to find an old video game switch that was required to hook it up to a tv via the coaxial cable. Hopefully mine will be here this week from ebay!

At any rate Jay I hope it was ok I needed an idea to use to play with and since platdude is in essence 8-bit I barrow him for my re-integration into Atari Basic! Here's the vid!

Platdude Error : Missing Pixel At Line 5 : Redo From Start

I still have my ST sitting in a nice case in my room, but never had an earlier Atari computer. Guy up the street had one, but.. you know.. you don't go around to a mate's to sit and code in basic for an hour
(Although, if I had, perhaps more mates would "get it" nowadays!!)

Welcome back!

Got joystick control working (EASY), and animation (WOW all new for me on atari basic)!

So...in the right image of platdude....should this just a normal side scroller where you jump the obstacles? Remember this is the atari! 1 button! I could make it so moving + button fires, and to jump you stand still and press button then move the character! or push up diagonally to jump. which would be simpler!

But this is all assuming that platdude uses a gun/weapon! Does he?

If you want an idea of "Proper" Platdude physics, (ie, not JNKPlat Two-Jump-Button, Gridded world, etc) give NeonPlat a try.

Platdude does NOT suit a gun. That was decided many many years ago.
He can throw things, but.. he's not a gun guy.

If you'd like to attempt to remake NeonPlat on there, that'd be entirely do-able.
Lines for floors, 1 sprite for Plat, a couple of balls, and a bat or two.
It'll be slightly simpler, but it really is a nice and easy game to make.

Note To All : I don't normally let people do this sort of thing, but this is different. It's on an Atari 800!! I'd be complaining long before now, if it weren't!

Lol! Thanks for your support! I am just using it to learn. I will post the code once done so if any one wants to download an atari 800xl emulator and try it.

And besides....like you said....ITS AN ATARI 800! COUGH*XL*COUGH!!

*EDIT*
The link you provided was neoplat 2 is that correct?

Yup, same game, but the sequel works on more systems, and has a nice multiplayer ability.

So what should I name it once done?

Maybe you should make a poll of it on the main page Jay?

Platdude XL
Platdude A8 (stands for Atari 800)
Platdude 800 (dunno bout that)

PlatXL seems a nice enough title! PlatdudeXL wouldn't fit in a 8.3 filename.

It reads as 'Plaxl' to me. Maybe you should add a hypthen, space or underscore to break it up.

You're looking at it in the wrong font. It'll look more like this..

Dude...is it possible to design a theme for the site that will use an atari style font?
Wed, 26 Jan 2011, 18:59
Jayenkai
There's a CPC theme, but the default CPC colours don't make for a great theme

But what about setting a font in it that is not standard on a pc?

What you still doing up? Isnt it like 2am there?

.... Coding!! and sleep fairly shortly afterwards!
I've always hated doing none-standard font stuff. Maybe someday, but probably not yet.
