Socoder -> On Topic -> .Net Open Source - Satya Nadella is what Microsoft needed

Breaking - .NET is now going open source AND multi platform, and the new VS 2013 is already released in a Community edition, which is akin to the Pro version!

This is an unprecedented move in Microsoft's history. I wonder what's next - Windows 9 released with open core? New gamedev framework? 40 terabyte (at the time of the Win2k leak - probably much greater now) of source going on GitHub?

I'm in two minds on this one.. Having a language be "open source" can have serious disadvantages.
.net already seems to require a significant system update every time you install something that uses a marginally different version of the language.
I can only imagine how chaotic that'll become with Open Source!!

... But if they can figure out a nice way to handle it, then it'll be useful. A lot of devs have been switching to .net over the years, and having the ability to maintain it themselves, should help in quite a few areas.

We'll have to wait and see...
