RIP : Michel Roux


A few years ago, I was subscribed to a monthly baking subscription box, from BakedIn
Today, they sent out the following email.

It’s with great sadness that I bring the news that Michel Roux passed away yesterday evening at the age of 79.

Michel was a much loved member of the Bakedin team. I vividly remember the first time I met him in 2015 on a sunny day at the Waterside Inn, and pitched him my vision for the Baking Club. He immediately got behind what we wanted to do and I was fortunate to be able to get him on board as an investor and advisor. He loved baking, having started his career as a pastry chef, and he was proud of the boxes we send out to you guys every month. Over the years he’s become a great mentor and friend, and we always looked forward to our meetings with him - Patrick and I were invited to The Waterside a few months ago for, without doubt, the most spectacular meal I’ve ever eaten. The respect and admiration from all the staff was palpable and I just hope one day we can say our little baking business is even close to being as successful as his. There is no question he was one of the most talented, passionate and important people in the culinary world and will be dearly missed by us all.

Whilst the recipes originate in the Bakedin kitchen from our own recipe developers, every single one went to Michel for him to personally tweak and approve. I've been hauled over the coals from him a few times for recipes that weren’t up to scratch, which just shows how much he genuinely cared. Those recipes went back to the drawing board, and nothing went out the door without his go ahead. The show will go on, and with the lessons Michel has taught us over the past 5 years we'll keep making recipes that would have made him and his family proud.
