Stress and Anxiety

So, for the last couple of weeks it's felt like the coof has been on my chest, I chatted to some of my workmates about it, as it had gone through everyone at the same time last month, and we were all in the same boat, which kinda sucks but what can you do.

I've been tasked with conveting of our stores EPOS system from one language to another shortly after lockdown began ~January 12th and have been busily getting things ready for it until what I thought was the big day, Friday just gone. It was pretty instense, cramming a project which had 20 months of work on it into 5 weeks but I knew I only had so much time untl the stores could be re-opened, culminating in pushing the big test release button to one store. And of course, bugs appear, which I then have to rapidly fix, now, I get stressy when there's a time limit in play, particularly when it's a vital system to the business and these bugs weren't obvious and happened without any inital pattern and after banging my head through enough opions I fixed the issue with minutes to spare, thinking "Yay, thank goodness that it's at least working a bit better" then faux sleeping on my desk for a few minutes to try and disspate some of the energy.

Turns out that within 5 minutes after that I staggered onto the bus and attempted to control what was swelling in my head and chest, chatted to an old bloke sat nearby who could tell that I wasn't well, and figured I'd get off the bus one stop early to get some fresh air in me, try to calm things down. Walk through the park, etc.

Just after getting through the park I started to find it oddly tougher to walk so slowed down but still it continued until I was on my knees in the middle of the highstreet, gasping for breath, trying to figure out if this was a panic attack or god forbid, something much worse.

After a few seconds I told myself to get the fuck up and carry on home, but I for some reason headed into the shop next door to grab some food..I don't know why, but my head wasn't fully on straight at that point,collapsed in the store for a minute, then dragged myself back home to collapse and figure out what the hell I was going to do next.

Phone up a frigging ambulance you twat is what you should all be rightfully saying now but for some reason I chose to phone my dad, my ex and my mum, Dad came over pretty quickly and helped me out to calm things downwhilke I was struggling to get out a sentence and it was all rather bizarre.

Spent the weekend, monday and part of today recovering in bed to the point where it feels like the stress and chest pains have dissepated and am feeling sorta close to normal again now.

Have cut coffee, tea and any sort of caffeine out from my diet for the short term and that seems to have helped me out a lot.

I don't know why I'm posting this on here, though, it's not for sympathy, it's more to serve as reminder to myself and alert other coders to not do as I do and let things get on top of you, to not become to personally attached to a project to such an extent that it harms (at least temporarily anyway) your health. I feel like I've had a lucky escape this time and need to change my mind with how I approach coding in general.

I'm also following this quite a lot with regards to dietary changes https://www.positivehealthwellness.com/diet-nutrition/15-foods-help-eliminate-anxiety/ which seems to be working quite well so far. Also, it feels like the coof has left my chest now, maybe I scared it away?!

Fook, that sounds scary.
I do hope you can take things easy for the next while. Try to get back on top of your health, more than anything.

Feck. Take care bud.

Talking about stress (as you have here) can actually help to relieve some of the tension. You need to find something else though to get rid of the rest. Learn to leave work at work and not let it be a personal thing. If the boss wants something changing/doing etc. etc. then he who pays the piper calls the tune but remind the boss that it takes a band to make the tune better and playing it faster than it should be played will not be melodious.

Be carefull with that stress. It can do permanent damage to the brain if it gets bad.

I tend to do it to myself ,that's the thing, kinda hoping that now I've had the big one, I'll be able to adjust my head around finally!

Thanks for the messages, am back to pretty much status quo once more.

So, I made a few steps back in the right direction again of late, since the weirdest parts of my head convincing me I was about to have a heart attack had become a way to regular feature, I called 111 and they, thankfully, calmed me back down from where I was and advised that I speak to a member of Talkworks, which I did last Wednesday and it has really helped me out.
I had a couple of occasions toward the tail end of last week where I would have worked myself up into a panic but managed to either roll through them, or, take the rest of the day off as I was going to be really no use to anyone.

Managed to do 4 40kg chest presses a couple nights ago and decided to jog home from work tonight, which really felt good, I hadn't done a proper jog in sooo long and, my legs are going to complain about suddenly going 7.5km but, it feels a bit better than before.

There was a movie on either netflix or Prime about how a young woman got sick. She had seizures and hallucinations and other mental problems. They did every test in existance and said it was psychiatric. The parents would not go with that and kept pushing. It was discovered she had a autoimmune disorder in her brain that was stil in early stages and would be completely curable.

The movie ended on a note about how many people actually have such a autoimmune decease which never gets diagnosed and have to live their lives on medication and stay sick.

There is a lot of room left for improvement in the medical world.

@rychan. Gawd, that sounds scary.
I guess living somewhat alone after isn't helping that much.
Being able to get into work probably helps a little, but then you've all the pressures of work on top.
I'm glad to hear you're finding your own way through it.

@Jay

It's not that scary now I look back on it, I was freaking myself out and that was the kicker really. My head is it's own worst nightmare sometimes I guess!

Living somewhat alone is okay for me so far, it's been 2 years nearly and I've been able to reconnect with family which has been great, as I hardly got a chance to see them before.

Yeah, work helps a bit, aside from when I over-stress myself. I think getting my fitness levels back up is going to be a major boon in general.

It seems long covid is here for a while longer, been very tired at work this week but I managed to jog home on Monday and do some weight training tonight, lower weight than before, back down to 30kg but still, better something than nothing.

Got another run tomorrow morning.

1.7mile (2.7km) jog completed in 17:10 today, not a great time by any stretch of the imagination but gonna keep upping the distance over coming days, did a lil 200m sprint back through the park on the way home, damn, it's hot out there still!
