Meta Connect 2023

This year's Meta Connect is due tomorrow and the next (27th/28th).
I've no idea how or where to watch it, but there's a website for it here, or their facebook page here

The Quest3 is almost certainly going to be showing up, though I'm not sure I'm in the financial position to get hold of one, right now.
... meh..

Going to wait for Black Friday and hope it's a bit cheaper Based on the reviews I've seen it does look like a good upgrade!

Oh, the difference. Crikey!
I mean, I knew it'd be impressive, but .. Crikey!
It's still not fast enough to run my browser games at a decent speed, though.
I mean, SpikeDislike does run at >60fps, but the system's aiming for 90fps and can't "quite" stick to that, jumping between 70 and 90, so it ends up stuttering a fair bit.
It's not "too" noticeable, but it's definitely not quite as silky smooth as I'd like.

As far as GotoJSE goes, again it struggles a fair amount to keep things going.
Optimisationalism 4 scores quite badly, here. Whether all of this is down to the browser not being 100% super-awesome, or the Qualcom chips not being all that great at 2D stuff... I'm not 100% sure.
But I definitely can make use of this as a "slow device" test bed, and try to optimise things towards it, which is great!

But when it's running games, though.
Ooooh!!!
Beat Sabre, Synth Riders, Tetris Effect and Zen Pinball were all tried out, and the clarity in the new displays is fantastic.
I still don't think the Quest 2 display was particularly "bad", but the Quest 3 display is outstanding!!
The colour passthrough is still a little muddy, but is perfectly serviceable, though it does flicker a little with the LED bulbs that are currently all through the bungalow.

You picked one up? Cool! I’m still waiting for the end of the month.

Good to hear your views about the display, the new pancake lenses are meant to be awesome.

Yep, was one of the first things I ordered, post-move, once I was sure my bank account could survive it
.. and a big box full of NongShim noodles, too, obviously!

On the Quest2 I'm currently playing I Expect You To Die 3, really good escape room games, and super high quality too.

7th Guest looks like a brilliant remake of the original... might pick that up next.

I have zero interest in this (and it would do my head in), but I do like the looks of the Ghostbusters game.

Have you tried VR Kuron? (And Google cardboard doesn't count )

To me it's the immersion of actually being in the game and the scale which you never get on a flatscreen monitor.

Post TBI, no. General 3D will usually do my head in now. That said, my zero interest in this is strictly due to dislike of Facebook/Meta/Zuckerberg. And that said, it is well outside of my price range since wifey died. Ole' Kuron is back to being poor as dirt.

Ideally, VR, AR & AI would make for the perfect combination and would need to be presented in a way that ski googles are not needed.

I know it is hard to remotely capture what people see with a simple screenshot, but so far with Quest, the only screenshot I have seen of a game that remotely interests me is of Ghostbusters. Some of the first screenshots shown a couple of years back were barely above 90s era 3D graphics.

Apple looks to be on the way to having the best tech, unfortunately Apple will likely lack the software or games and third-party developers to take advantage of the tech.

Yeah, if you're not affording a Quest, you sure as hell ain't affording anything Apple can come out with!!
Honestly, Kuron, use me as the test bed here. I have physical motion issues, I can't game on anything larger than an iPad screen due to nausea, and I struggle to play 3d games unless they're slow-moving and have very little movement.
Yet, I seem to be able to cope fantastically well with Quest. .. to a degree.

One of the little AR test game things is "First Encounters" where little fluffy aliens leap out of portals, all around your room, and you have to spin around and shoot them all.
It's technologically impressive as hell, but the spinning wasn't for me. No, no, no!!!
I sat and stared at the fireplace, shooting everything that came close enough to my "forward" visual range, leading to a decidedly rubbish score.

I definitely wouldn't say 90s. Maybe GameCube era.
Most of the "rubbish looking" visuals are down to the devs limited capabilities. A LOT of the games are little indie things, not big AAA titles.
For AAA quality, there's a bunch of Star Wars games that definitely look infinitely better, though at the same time, seem to be the sorts of games that want me flailing around like a lost chicken.

I'll try a few of the more impressive ones out, later, and post a few screenings for you.

As for the "Facebook" issues. I haven't seen any. But then I've turned off things like Messenger and whatnot, so...
*shrugs*

As to slow moving 3D, I find that games/demos written in DB Classic were still okay for me, and IIRC, those were limited to 40 FPS by default? For me, 1st person, 3rd person doesn't matter it is more the speed. I am fine with the old Croc or Crash Bandicoot. Latest I have played with is this one and I am fine with it, but it is very retro.

For me something that will always set off my head is while in motion, driving or riding in a vehicle, turning my head while in motion and looking behind me and usually even just sitting here at the desk and turning my head and looking behind me, it can mess up my head and it can be a couple of weeks before it feels right again. It is why I have a pivot desk chair and turn around completely. Very unsteady on my feet and having bad knees makes it worse. Walk like a drunk pirate with a peg leg on a ship in the middle of a horrible storm. LOL

Ditto.

Just turn off the walls/obstacles in Beat Saber, and you'll be fine
(Though I much prefer SynthRider for its musical choice)

Regarding graphics, yeah stand-alone are not the best, but PCVR using the Quest is good (https://store.steampowered.com/app/546560/HalfLife_Alyx/)... but you need the headset and then a decent Gaming PC.

The technology is getting better and better each year, this is still a consumer device and “cheap” really, but it is just entertainment so save your pennies.

Meta/Facebook, same as Jay when I don’t even really notice the company for the Quest.

As you can see I really think VR is it and a bit, it is next level gaming and experiences.

I think VR is the future as well. I would just be more interested in seeing a company more known for gaming trying to bring a device to market. At least In the case of Apple, they seem to be taking an approach to general computing which is extremely interesting -- if not unique.

Each new version gets better and will eventually hopefully get cheaper as it is more widely adopted. *big grin*

Not a particularly exciting shot of a Star Wars game, granted, but it makes me motion sick like crazy, so this is as good as you're getting

This is that Mixed Reality demo thing, with all the little furry creatures hiding in my bedroom.

And I HATE that Zen Pinball's Back to the Future table has soundalike actors. Really lets it down.

When I get my Quest 3, I'll be downloading all my old games, to see which ones have a Q3 update

From the screen shots of Walking Dead it is a huge difference.

Loving seeing the little monsters taking over your room Jay 😂
