Learn Na'vi

Saw Avatar and liked the language?

https://www.learnnavi.org
Learn Na'vi, the language spoken by the Na'vi in the movie 'Avatar'!

Some example sentences:

Oel ngati kame - I see you
Kaltxì, ngaru lu fpom srak? Hello, how are you?

Some words:

Nari - Eyes
Oe - I/me
Nga - You
Lu - To be
Atan - Light
Srane - Yes
Irayo - Thanks

Currently the language has about a 1000 word dictionary and a project to translate 'Hamlet' by using Google Wave is currently ongoing!

When the Trek folk first created Klingon, they did it to ensure the movies had a kind of structure to them, rather than random k'ach's and H'ij's and things. It wasn't meant as a language, more as a reference point for the writers.

The cynic in me can't help but see this as nothing more than advanced hype. For a 'language' to have take hold so quickly, it feels like someone's manipulating things behind the scenes.

For Klingon, you had hundreds of thousands of die hard trekkies.

This can't already be that big... Can it?

It's advanced hype, but then it's not. It's not a 'language', it's an actual language. Cameron hired a linguist named Paul Frommer to create the language for the movie, he also added syntax and grammar.
The press obviously caught hold of this, and Frommer has since done between 10 - 20 interviews that are available online. He's also got a really full inbox.
The dictionary that includes the most words is in the book Avatar: A Confidential Report on the Biological and Social History of Pandora.
Besides that, Frommer has released bits of grammatical structure and extra words through emails, in interviews etc.
There's also a huge article on Wikipedia which sums up most of what is currently known about the language (aside from the complete dictionary).

I disagree, Jay. I really applaud Cameron for delving this far into his imaginary world. He even fleshed out parts we never see onscreen. I think it really helped; you could tell while watching that Pandora was a very ...structured world, more so than most science fiction.

That said, I ain't taking the time to learn the language.

I don't mind that it's been done. Nowadays you should take the time to bother to do that kind of stuff, or else nitpickers will complain.. It's just..
..
In, what, 3 weeks since the release? Or thereabouts..

That's a very large amount of stuff to happen in that amount of time.

Just feels really forced to me.

Obviously the language wasn't developed in three weeks! Paul Frommer's been working on it for at least two years. But the official dictionary was never publicly available until after the movie was released.

What's Navi for "dust off and nuke the site from orbit"?

It's the only way to be sure
