All of my recent "Mass Backup" stuff is making me realise just how shittilly slow my NAS drive truly is.
It's alright once the stuff's on there. It's a very capable backup drive, and is also great for doing DLNA based music/video streaming around the house.
.. But bloody hell, is it slow at writing stuff..

I'm currently sitting waiting for it to store my latest iTunes purchases. I bought a couple of old Songs To Wear Pants To albums, each one containing about 70 tracks, each track about half a minute or so long..
... And so I wait...
And wait...

*sigh*

Doing the complete backups is even worse.

So, I'm finding myself looking through possible replacements, and am alarmingly shocked at the prices of half-decent ones.
A full-on kick-ass proper NAS setup can rocket up to about £600, once you add a couple of drives to the thing.

GAH!!

Any recommendations? What are you guys using? And how fast are they!!??

I still use two external hard drives. Both are IDE.

One is an 80 Gig Drive that has ports on the front of it which is useful when I plug the drive into the USB slot since it gives me two on the front of the box.
So if I have 3 on the laptop, plug that drive in I still have four free.
The 80 gig is not that slow but my backups consist of mainly a drag and drop of files into the drive. I do not use any special software for backups.
The other drive is a 500 Gig drive, that when formatted leaves me with approximately 450 gig. This drive is OK for speed as well.

Your backup needs are probably larger than mine. I rely on backing up the software installers and any work related files such as graphics just so I can reinstall them again later during a full cleaning of the drive.
I would recommend an external drive that has ports on the front so that you can give yourself some options when you are running your equipment.

My not using a complete image backup of a full installation and restoring that may be on a different level as for speed and size.
I can only recommend that store that no one here likes much www.fryselectronics.com for a large overview of what is available.
They have some great External USB 3.0 boxes for as little as $20 US, some with a 3 year or if you're lucky, a lifetime warranty.
Putting a USB 3.0 new bare drive into one of those is about $80.00 US which would give you a terabyte of space.

These are just some options. There are more but few cheaper with more reliable warranties than Frys.

I use one of those "WD My Passport" drives.
