Wireless Electricity

Intel cuts electric cords with wireless power system

https://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080821/ts_afp/usitinternetenergychipcompanyintel
"Electricity was sent wirelessly to a lamp on stage, lighting a 60 watt bulb that uses more power than a typical laptop computer."

Bloody hell!

!!!

Bit freaky, and can't imagine it'd be safe if every device in your house used it!

But cool!

Hang on a sec, this isn't new. Electric tooth brushes have charged like this for years. All they seem to be doing is taking the two halves of a transformer and putting them in two different objects. For those who don;t know, a transformer either steps up or steps down the power by using magnetism, the [mains] power goes into one coil, causing it to become an AC electric magnet. The magnetic field is them picked up by the second coil and the motion is turned into electricity using the dynamo effect. So unless i've completely forgot everything I learned at school (please feel free to correct me, cos, I might very well have confused myself with this), you just stick the first half somewhere, apply the power to it and stick the other half in the thing you want powered.

Apparently, Nikola Tesla did something like that yonks ago.

In this experiment, energy was transferred over a distance; electric tooth brushes sit on their chargers. Big difference.

That is fricken sweet. Just imagine never needing batteries again. Or chargers. Devices instantly powered by magnetic fields.

isnt there some health issues with strong magnetic fields on people?

Steve: Yes, Tesla did it! What an amazing man... I wish i could have hung out with him....

Now, who wants to wager on some horrific accident when Bob in accounting suddenly becomes a viable ground for free-floating energy!

Electromagnetic fields have been said to cause paranoia and nausea among other things, though it hasn't been scientifically proven.
