DS Carts legal in France

https://www.engadget.com/2009/12/04/nintendo-loses-ds-flash-cart-case-in-french-court/
An odd trend.
Some countries have obscure legal systems that DO appear to understand the whole "Homebrew" thing!

Both France and Spain have now considered DS Flashcarts to be useful devices that extend the functionality of the DS, with French courts going so far as to suggest that folk should be able to program the devices they own.

Kick ass!!!

Indeed, I do agree with the whole 'Nintendo should not make it so difficult to code for their systems' I personally think that the popularity of ye olde home computers, such as the C64 was because they were so open, yes they had anti-piracy techniques, some of them worked too, but when it comes to homebrew, if Nintendo made it a specific function of the system, then bedroom coders wouldn't have to help fund piracy just to do something they love.
I myself wouldn't mind paying a reasonable fee to code on the ds/wee using official tools, but I have no choice but to use unofficial software and potentially illegal hardware. I mean, $2,000 - $10,000 for the official kit!!! Thats just not good enough.

yeh here in spain, they sell them in all the shops and they even encourage you to buy one in some of the shops when you buy a nintendo ds and one even went as far as saying you can download games illegally for it.

That's the issue though. For every legit DS homebrew indie developer there are a 100 people who just want to use it in order to get games for free.

That's what I LOVED about the Datel Games'n'Music card.
Still, to this day, afaik, there's no WAY to play a copied rom on the thing.
It's literally JUST for homebrew, music and vids.

Cool beans! Score one for the indie devs!

@JL235: I see your point exactly, but I'd rather not let a 100 bad apples spoil it for that one dev. If Nintendo is concerned about illegal games, they need to implement some other form of copy protection on the game software itself.

They have, apparently most recent games have now anti piracy measures, which work on a pre game basis, rather than some general block that once patched by the loaders would fix many games. This new way means that each game must be patched individually, making it much harder for pirates.
