I found I had a trojan I dident know about a few days ago, so removed it. It was an exe called fservice in my system32 folder. It ran on startup and at various other times while my PC was running. Since it was removed I kept getting stupid messages saying cant find fservice. How can I stop my computer for looking for this file? As a half fix to stop the message appearing I made an fservice.exe in C that does nothing, but now I get the console window flashing up from time to time. |

Search the registry (WinKey+R "regedit" enter) for fservice.exe, and remove all occurences. (But be careful you don't break anything!) If not.. Go to Services (Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services) and keep flicking through the services' properties till you find the fservice.exe then try disabling/removing that. -=-=- ''Load, Next List!''

i had a virus to, on friday. it stared when me and my friend were doing some animation stuff, it started running really slow, then i ran a few scans and found one, its all good now though. i had one a while ago that was freaking bad, it completey screwed up my computer, but its all good now. yey.

I found some stuff to do with fservice in my registry and deleted it. I then deleted the prog I put in system32 folder but I get that message again. I think the entry in my registry might have been given some dodgy name. I got several free registry cleaner programs but they only seem to do part of the job unless you buy them. Is there any free registry cleaners that will clean it out properly? |

I think I'LL check this AVG out. I currently have the premium AOL security and firewall tools. I also have the lite version of Disspy. Detects and dissolves spyware,malware,dialware and all kinds of popups, spycookies, and keyloggers too. I did have Webroot but only the trial version. running Disspy again...right now.....  cheers, power mousey |

If you need an anitvirus for free, go to: Pack.google.com and you can get Norton antivirus 2005 suscribtion for six months, free. |

In that case, the sad truth is, you're likely to have a great deal more viruses there. If norton picks something up, your computer probably has over a hundred viruses by then. Norton doesn't pick up squat, and relying on it has come close to wrecking my computer a few times. -=-=- blog | work | code | more code |

hobo is right, norton sucks but i still the "not even norton can save you" shirt from www.jinx.com. AVG is all you need, especially since it fused with ewido recently. i am buying this piece of software soon. also this is why linux kicks windows' ass (along with running on lower specs a lot better than windows) -=-=- i like green haired girls... |

 Hoboben: Norton doesn't pick up squat, and relying on it has come close to wrecking my computer a few times. Norton did wreck my pc once, when I un-installed it. Many times has it also spotted but been unable to remove viruses. One time I wrote a program in Blitz which would write over the virus during the brief milliseconds after I closed the process (it was keep on restarting automatically). Other times I've had to go into dos to delete a virus manually. It's really worrying when I have to go to these lengths because Norton won't do it. |

Jeez... That's absurd! I'm assuming that you are using something else now? When I said Norton came "close" to wrecking my PC, what I meant was that I had to wipe the hard drive and re-install windows |edit| And now I use Linux ; - ) |edit|, only I managed to backup most of my stuff first. "Avast!" got rid of the single offender, plus mutations, sisters and brothers, instantly once we installed it, but the computer's core system was corrupted beyond repair. If I hadn't been able to back-up (nearly all times I tried to open CD-burning software, or any software, for that matter, I'd get a BSOD), then I would have had my computer well and truely wrecked, and Norton would have recieved a few angry letters. It's not like people can just say "It's just one lot of viruses that Norton missed, and I'm sure other AV programs don't pick them all up either". That's bull. The lot I got were well known, out for ages, and reported to Norton before. Every single major free AV software would've got them. -=-=- blog | work | code | more code |

I used Avast for a while, but it seemed to keep giving me "Hey! It's Updated!" pop ups every 10 minutes, which I found very annoying. I went back to AVG fairly soon. I'm fairly sure that Norton can pick up 99% of viruses, but it's really bad at getting rid of them, as Columbo says, leaving it up to you most of the time. AVG seems to do a better job of things, most of the time just dealing with things in the background. Although, to be honest, it's been a long while since I had anything serious on my system. -=-=- ''Load, Next List!''

Norton removed some registries needed for Service Pack 2 on mine (it's a documented problem on both the Microsoft and Semantic websites) causing Windows to only boot in safe mode. The only fix I could get working (I did try editing the registries) was to uninstall Service Pack 2. Windows then works, but with about a million more problems. At the time I was also uninstalling an old version of Norton so I could install the latest my dad had just bought. That PC still uses Norton but all the others now use either free or subscription AVG. But I would say Norton is hundreds of times better then McAffee. Their virus protection seems to run on the idea of slowing your PC down to the point where nothing will run, including viruses. And so instant, constant, guaranteed protection! |

Why is everyone dissing Norton Antivirus, after all, it may be pathetic but atleast it works and aleast it doesn't go claiming that other antivirusus are viruses (looks at macaffe) and then keeps on disabling them.

dude, it is a piece of software and can't say anything about another one. the reason we don't like norton is because it doesn't get rid of viruses and hardly finds them. also macaffe is in the same place for most of us, i hate bloated piece of code AVG is the best thing to date imo -=-=- i like green haired girls... |
