in all the scans etc i've done over the last few days, at NO point has windows said "hang on, your SSD is looking a bit fucked. You might want to swap it out first".

Not a bit of it... it's happy to just sit there for ten hours knowing full well it can't do what it's trying to do.

So.... now what? Is my SSD *really* fucked? Does the Creators update just not like SSDs in general? One thing I do know, my laptop now feels slower than a fecking Chelsea fan.

So.. it was definitely the hard drive?
Seems odd that it would constantly get stuck at the same place, though.

I dunno. None of the scans have found any errors. And I don't really fancy doling out another £90 for a new SSD if it's just going to be the same.

I have a spare 120GB Samsung SSD somewhere so I might have a go with that. I dunno if I can cope with my laptop being this slow.

...and now my keyboard is acting up. FFS....

It's my bestest mechanical keyboard as well! Currently squirting IPA into the switches that are double-hitting.

Keyboard seems fixed now. Just discovered that my non-working(?) SSD has firmware that's years out of date. So updated that and used Samsung's own testing software which revealed that the drive itself is apparently fine.

Will reinstall it later and let the update have another go, and if that doesn't work I'll just pop the old HDD back in (that's currently working, but slow). My laptop is too slow for doing Unity dev anyway so I don't suppose having a slow HDD is really the end of the world.

How long have you had your SSD? I have the Samsung 850 EVO 500GB. Wondering how long i can expect it to last.

Well... I have no hard evidence that it's broken.

Its about 3 years old I think. Currently trying yet another reinstall to see if the firmware update helped.

Update - my hard drive is most definitely NOT dead!

Updated the firmware, repeated the installation process - worked perfectly. Now to reinstall all my crap, again.

Wow.. That's fucked up..

Makes you wonder if they build this shit into the firmware deliberately to encourage people to buy a new drive that they don't really need. I'm convinced they do it with mobile phones so why not SSDs as well?
