I can't read it on a phone which is where I do most of my Internet things so I save it for when I'm on the laptop.

Due to broken, or due to size?
If you hit the paintbrush, there's a "mobile view" option in there. Plus undock the two sidebars, obv.
(Settings stored in local cookie, so you don't break your regular desktop view)

It's the scrolling and zooming in and out I was struggling with. It's a little better on my new phone which is a larger screen and resolution. My last one was an iPhone 6 which is way too small to display anything.

Ah - paintbrush, hadn't noticed it - with mobile view and docked it's all sorted.

Haha - will be short lived. Made some bad (blind) choices in recent days.

I have been trying to do them daily now. I had not known there was a score tied to it. I have been climbing a bit. 4th place was the highest so far .

Still love the daily question. Reminds me to come back and visit which helps as often I open a browser to mostly google something and often forget to visit sites I like...

Anyways, had some ideas for it, if you ever get itchy to do something with it:

1) High Scores
For current active players, display their all time highest score achieved - Can you reach the top?
In your table store the current score if higher or equal to your high score, optionally a date to show when you last achieved that high score.

2) Voting list - what you voted for.
Where you show the total votes for each item on past days, place a marker next to the items you voted for. It pains me sometimes I can't remember which one I voted for (in the past)

3) Show what place each person is currently in - 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc ...

There was also a discussion on Play By Mail recently. I've played a version of Risk, and also a racing game, based on PBM but online - you put in a new move/command every day and you get to see the result the next day, then make your next command.

I bet, if you are interested, you could create a suitable multiplayer game, linked from the homepage, to take a command every day and show the result. Get people competitive around one of your game ideas.

For 1 and 2, the same answer goes.
I wrote the poll script back in 2008 (maybe even 2007?) and that kind of expandability is absolutely not something that's easy to achieve!
I could maybe hack'n'slash the script to try and get it to work, but I'm not too hopeful, if I'm honest.

For 3.. you mean in the main forum?
Hmmm.. the poll data and user data are 2 very different databases, but I'll definitely look into ways of achieving it, without resorting to figuring it out on the fly. (Which is how the poll scores page currently does it!)

I might have to get the nightly "make a new poll" script to gather points up, then plop them into the main database as a cached value. Not sure it has write access to the main database, and. .. it's hardly the world's most secure script!!

I like the idea of a racing play by day game, kinda scalextrix like but you have to decide whether to speed up, slow down or maintain pace. Go too fast get set back 2 spaces, with 0 speed.

I imagine that sort of thing would be more frustrating than anything, having to wait a day between turns..

The racing game was strangely captivating. I can't remember all the details but it was a bit like scalextrix in that you had tracks.

I think you had action points, and could gain a bonus one or two depending upon conditions. On your turn you'd choose how to spend those points - for example:

1) move forward (less) and change lane - 1 point
2) move forward more, don't change lane - 1 point
3) use a feature - I think if I remember correctly it was a bit like car wars, where you could drop spikes or fire a missile

That type of thing. It was a lot of fun to play, because you are playing with a group of people you know.

Took a bit of searching, the RISK one was through this site: https://www.conquerclub.com/

I think you can set the duration so it doesn't have to be every day, it can be when all people have made their moves.

It'd have to be a daily thing.
Otherwise, what if someone's super busy at work and doesn't have time to play for days at a time.
The whole game would be stuck.

Similarly if it were something like "you can take a turn every hour", then anyone stuck at home 24/7 with sod all else to do (eg, me) would have a HUGE advantage over anyone else who might actually have a life..

.. ho-hum..

I like the Daily Poll questions because it gets me reminiscing about things I haven't thought of for a while, like being 10 years old playing Eternal Champions with my neighbor friend. Or if I don't recognize the options in the Poll I can look them up and learn something new.

I do wish the songs had their artist in the front of the track title. Any way to make that happen?

Those 60s songs eh? All fecking shite! There are thousands of classics from that decade. But we had to vote on the worst!
Tue, 05 Oct 2021, 04:14

@ProHiScore
If you can hunt down a list of the top 100 or so songs from each decade that includes song+artist, in a simply formatted way that I can throw into the Poll Script, then do let me know.
Otherwise, no, because trying to find that was a right pain in the arse!!

Will keep them appropriate to the site of course

The actual end result is Question|Answer1|Answer2|...|Answer8
Probably best to avoid apostrophes and ampersands, because .. it seems to be browser/system dependant whether those bugger it up!!

If you're scouring for lists like the singles/albums/tv shows/etc, then pretty much anything that's as basic as can be, and easily accessible by a script, so csv, tsv, etc are probably best.
Otherwise I'm having to parse webpages and the like, and that's not always easy to do.

If you're gathering lists, then know that the results will be randomised for fairness.
