Socoder -> Books -> E-Readers!

I'm thinking of buying the e-reader amazon offers, the Kindle

But actually I've never seen anyone around with an e-reader yet. What are the good and bad things?

+ It doesn't have a backlight
+ It can store many books
+ 3g connection without monthly fee
+ way cheaper books!

- maybe a bit small?

Do you have an e-reader and what do you think about it?

The only thing I have heard about e-readers, is that an e-paper screen is much better than an lcd one because there is almost no glare, whereas with an lcd screen you look at your own reflection far more than you look at the book.
I don't have an e-reader, I sometimes read real books. I can say this though, if I left a real book on the bus it wouldn't bother me nearly as much as if I left an e-book on the bus.

Staring at any screen for hours can fuck your eyes.
But, come on, we all do it!!!
I've been quite content using the free Stanza book reader on my iPod.
Neat, and easier to read with the lights off, curled up in bed.

It's my understanding that the kindle doesn't need a backlight and won't strain your eyes like monitors do. Infact the screen only uses power when it changes the image, not constantly like a monitor. But to be fair I don't actually own one.

I really like e-readers and would love to own one. But for me they are a waste of money because I only read one or two books a year. Owning one will not encourage me to read more.

I definately wouldn't buy the Kindle now that the Apple iPad has been revealed. In fact, if I was hellbent on getting an e-reader, I'd wait until the iPad is released in the US and get it from eBay!

well, a kindle with 3g, 190 euro. That might be worth it.
But when I want an ipad with 3g, around 600-700 euro? no thanks

Regardless of the price of the iPad, the Kindle is mighty expensive for what it does. I wouldn't waste your money.

But it's not really fair to compare the 6" Kindle to the 9" iPad. A more fair comparison is the Kindle DX, at which point the price difference is a mere $10.

If you're really concerned about the screen hurting your eyes, just buy the books and then sell them when you're finished. You'll save tons and your eyes will be happy.
