A couple of weeks ago, I started playing with a Racing Track engine.
I thought it might be nice to have a good-old-fashioned retro racing thing.
So I drew a track piece, and created a nice engine to randomly generate a track.

yeay!
Silky smooth, and nice and fast.

And then, the very same day, Foppy released his Grand Prix game.

D'oh!!!

Not wanting to be Mr Copy Pants, I decided to take the track engine, and turn it into something a little different.

Over the past week, I've been poking and prodding at the little bugger, to try to desperately get something more "gamey" out of it, and then on Sunday, something magical happened!

It suddenly became a track based shoot-em-up, with loads of lovely whizzy effects all over it!

Since then, I've been desperately scrambling to get something else done for AGameAWeek, so that I can get another week to focus on this thing.

I've decided that, with it being as nice as it is, it's worthy of a "Bigger Game" effort, so it's release is being delayed until August 27th.. Which makes this one Game #300 in my archive..

Blimey!!!

I'll be aiming to get it onto the iOS AppStore on the same day, which gives me little under a week to get everything organised.
Crazy times ahead!!

I'd previously stripped out a lot of the effects from the Android edition, due to crappy framerates.
I've since discovered that it was all down to my use of Ovals to draw the stars..

Monkey --> Android tip.. If drawing circles, draw circular sprites instead!!

All loveliness is back! Mmmmm....

That is clever.
You are good making games for portable devices.
The original one is good as well.

...Think you could emulate mode7 in there?

Probably, but the track's more freeform than a true mode7 could handle. It's be better attempting a classic retro 3D styled track, but I didn't want to do that just after Foppy's released his little retro racer. Heck, that's pretty much why I've ended up with a shooter!!

I've also not yet attempted any of Monkey's rawer graphics stuff, like quads and GL functionality, mostly because I'm unsure how well it'll work on all the different targets. (If at all!) But you'd need that to get that working properly, since you'd need to add perspective to the sprites. No amount of simple scaling and rotation can achieve that sort of effect properly.

Perspective FTW!!

This is what Hard mode looks like, when played in the dark, on an iPad!
Be aware that most of the bloom is a result of the lighting in the room, not the game!! The game does indeed look luvly, just not THAT lovely

You really are honestly good at what you do.

I bet you are glad that you started well before portable devices.

The world does not know yet.

Since Apple has no concept of timing, I've set BlastTrax to release a day early on iOS so that it's DEFINITELY available on my Launch Day. That means, you probably should be able to get the iOS Edition NOW! (*depending on where you are in the world, and when Apple decides that it's officially the day that the game should be available!)

Meanwhile...

FIRST REVIEW! woot!!

Such a bizarre situation..

The iOS release happened a day early because of my lack of trust in Apple's timezone crap.
I've popped the Android edition on, since I didn't want a time-delay between me putting it on, and it appearing on people's GooglePlay.
And now the Monkey site's html5 edition has been popped up, too..
Seems the only place you can't play my game is on my own sodding AGameAWeek website!!!!

Lesson learned. Next time people can sodding well be patient, and I'll do it all on the Tuesday, instead, and to hell with time delays!!

If I turn on any blur I get your menu items re-offset halfway across the screen and a weird yellowish tint to the upper-left quadrant. More blur makes the offset duplicates and the yellow tint more opaque.

IIRC one of your older titles had this problem and you eventually fixed it. Or I stopped playing it. One or the other.

Oh, I suppose I should mention I'm on Android.

"Blur" is simply...

..no cls
.. Draw alpha'd rectangle

This, on 95% of things since the early 80s, results in screen feedback.

Some pillock's broken it on Android.

This is why on Android, this setting defaults to "none", and everything else it defaults to "plenty"
.. Fucking Android.

Enjoying the popularity of this game, but holy fucknuts, the amount of Android based shite I'm collecting is INSANE!!!

"Use our amazing adverts in your game. Generate more income!!"

"Pay us $$$ and get an awesome review!!!!"

"Have you considered making your game available from OUR portal!??! We can make you many has $$$$££!"

Piles of Garbage

LOTS of piles of garbage.

You'd think this would mean that my game is skyrocketting to the top of the Android charts, and is being noticed because it's sales are so amazingly awesome.

In truth, I've sold 7 copies on Android.

SEVEN...

Fucking hell, these people are relentless..

And yet, at the same time, the iOS edition's managed about 100 sales, and I'm getting next to no spam-crap from them.

Fucking Android.. God damnit...
