Huawei Band 9

Not sure if I can code for it. Can't even download the dev-kit without requiring ID, which I have smeg all of... So, that's a frickin' dead end, right there.
Damnit, I really need a passport.

Anyhoo, bought this today. It's Mum's birthday tomorrow, and mine in a few weeks, so we both got one each. Mine black, Mum's a kind of light pinkish hue.

£39.99, heart rate monitor, step counter, watch, notifications, and "about a week" as far as battery goes, though I'll let you know IRL stats as we go.

Whether Mum keeps hers on, will have to be seen. She has a lot of allergies to wearing jewellery and watches and such, so whether she'll cope with this.. ... We're guessing not.
But it was "only" forty quid, so that's ok.. right..?!

Wait, you need 'actual ID' to set up an account?

You can sell your watch faces, so .. yeah, I guess they need to check ID before all the payments and taxes and shit..
...
Either that or "creepy Chinese company does creepy things"
....

A month and a half later

No grumbles so far.
Notifications are perfectly readable, even with my failing eyesight. 95% of settings and things can be done on-device using the touchscreen.

The battery has lasted perfectly well. A quick charge whilst I'm showering, and I haven't seen it drop below about 50%, after leaving it on the shower-room's windowsill and forgetting to charge it!!
I imagine if I left it , fully charged and then uncharged for a while, it'd likely last maybe a week or so? Maybe.. Not sure.
It's certainly better than one of those "Charge me every day or screw you..." watches that seem to be popular.

Accuracy

The heart rate monitoring and SpO2 blood oxygen levels are syncing up with my finger blood oxygen doohickey, so I'm pretty happy with the accuracy of those.
The steps and sleep tracking has been pretty accurate, too.
There's a "Workout" mode, which has about 7,000 different activities that it can track, but no VR..
.. Why no VR!?
I've been setting it to "Fencing", because Beat Saber, and that seems like it's working well enough.
If this were Open Source like the Pebble, then I could very easily fix that... ... Hmm..

From the main watch-face, swipe once for Heart stats, a second time for Activity stats, and a third for Sleep stats.

Faces

As far as watch faces go, I've tried a number of faces, but ultimately I've ended up sticking with the one shown in my first post, mostly because it has my heart and steps at a glance. And the date!!.. And the time, I suppose..

The app is used to download watch faces, and both free and premium faces are available. The free choice is VAST, though, and I haven't found that lacking in the slightest, nor have I yet paid for any watch faces. The choice is certainly huge.

Still a bit peeved that I can't code my own, though if I'm honest, I haven't really given that much attention, I probably should, I mean.. That's kinda the point, right?! But, meh, whatever.

Overall

It's working great with my iPhone, and I presume it works just as well with Android devices, too.
It's very much locked down, and I expect to find myself freaking out in a few years when Huawei do that thing that certain companies do, and brick the devices for no apparent reason.. .... ( 4. Profit )

For right now, though, it's working well enough, and is doing everything that I'd need a smartwatch to do.

Mum, too, has been happy with hers, and is wearing it 24/7 (but for charging) like I am. It's odd to see Mum wearing a watch, and is especially odd to see her glancing at her watch when notifications come in! As a "Don't tell the internet how old I am" year old, I'm really quite surprised that she's seemingly fallen in love with the thing.
She's also surprised that she's actually been able to physically wear the device, as she's always had skin-irritations when wearing jewellery.

So, yeah, me and Mum are actually really quite happy with this watch.
Would I recommend it?
Damn straight I would!
It's currently £35 on the Amazon. Thirty Five quid..

I mean, why wouldn't you?

...other than the locked down OS and such.

Looks really good, but a warning in the reviews is the app needed for this is not on the Google app store for Android users. You have to install it from Huawei's and that's smells a bit dodgy. I couldn't find anything on Google play store so it looks likely the review is correct.

Aww nuts, I was pondering over getting one with the sole purpose of making shiny things for it, but I have a few other things going on so another plate is probably not worth spinning up currently.,
