Socoder -> Off Topic -> New Idea

SoCode-A-Thon has been gone for a while. Yes, it was cool, but the fun of it really died off. Well I noticed something members are enjoying, one word. Hacking. So I have a new idea, I more fun idea.

I am going to begin work on a site soon. It will be a competition between members to hack in to a custom made site. There will be intentional flaws put in the sites security. Your job is to find them and exploit them. The competition will begin on a Friday night and then it will be closed when all exploits have been found (or until X amount of time has passed). There will be a statistics system to track what users have exploited what flaws, and there will probably be a chat system for you guys to taunt each other. Hacking teams could also become a possibility. There can be time released "clues" to help you if you get stuck. It might need a list of goals to complete. The competition will be recapped later, explaining how the site was cracked. All the holes. And how people cracked the site. This sounds like a very fun idea. Any ideas?

Seems like a fun idea, but obviously be wary of your site getting hacked to death!

And.. probably best not to invite MisterX. The other teams wouldn't get a look in

You should also set certain restrictions on what can be done. For example to stop me from accessing the site several million times simultaneously to bring down the server.

Socoder may not be as popular as before, but I really do think an easy and quick to access coding chat room would be a great idea. In that you could very easily, quickly and casually distribute pictures, ideas and code in real-time between chatting members. Maybe if it had some form of integration with Socoder, so it felt less as though we were joining yet another post-CW forum, then it would be more popular.

But he is not alone.

Just relax... sometimes there's no need to argue.

ingenium, you are wrong. you can hack a site or computer if the owner gives you permission. how do you expect the companies that make firewalls test their software?

they hire hackers to try to hack it.

Why would you want that? If the site is openly inviting you to hack it then its owner can hardly try and prosecute someone for doing so.

Anyway I think it sounds like a cool idea. I havent had a go at any of this stuff before, but it might be fun to learn.

I agree more with DD. Hacking challenge sites are everywhere. "Hack-This-Site", for example. What DD suggested would be more beneficial to the community. (Not that Im saying we should be your main concern...It is your webspace.)

I think DD.....the son of Columbo,

should make his own site. And, it should be on
the basics of private investigstion and detective work.
He, then should put up grisly and bloody murder cases for us to solve and also rampant and ruckus reckless of certain individuals. We match the criminal to the crime.
We read up and research these and other crimes and then we try to solve the crimes. The person(s) involved, any motives, and the approximate times that the crimes could've happened.

But first, some basic tutorials on being a detective and also especially one on how to properly wear a trench coat and smoke a cigar.
We also learn the art of some hacking and some of cyber crimes too. An extra bonus and benefit in the course. true.

cheers,

yes,

and doing the best I can. true
but wish it was warmer and I want Spring and Summer to come fast.

um, ingenium, just joking. His avatar or pic has Peter Falk as Columbo. The dude who is smoking a cigar and is wearing a trench coat
But then again, why doesn't Diablo(DD) make a site like this or even a site about Ruby.

hmmmm....yes, true.

I will make a list of what you can and can't do. Clearly something like a DoS attack is not permitted. And you will be hacking in to the site, not the server. Hacking in to the server will be prohibited. Also anything getting me in trouble with my host will be prohibited. Just an idea of what will be allowed. Searching threw folders, mysql injection, html injection, javascript injection, encryption cracking tools, sending POST data to the site using a external form you created. I'll get something official written though for later.

Any feature ideas?

How about JavaScript crash pages to test the security of your browser?

There are currently no plans for a 'Detective Tutorial' website.

aw shucks Diablo.

I was looking forward on how to become a private eye and learn the art of investigation and interrogation.

still, looking forward to your Ruby site....if and when you like to put one up. I think you should too. Cause you are so into Ruby.
