Socoder -> Off Topic -> Vista is How Much??????????

I have been looking around on the net and found out some interesting things. The first page, which is what the title explains, is the pricing of Vista:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista_editions_and_pricing

If you convert the price in £ to $, you find that almost every version of Vista is over 50% more expensive in the UK than it is in the USA. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The second page i found is something which makes up for this slightly, and is rather funny, as it can save you about $100!

blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=196

This means you can use an upgrade version of Vista, to do a clean install. Shows how stupid Microsoft is...

I was given a free edition of Vista Business, Windows XP, two copies of XP Pro and XP Embedded, as were around 100 other students here.

I am tempted to install, as it is a big improvement over XP.

Yeah DD. Vista has more holes in it than a sponge. It's basically xp media centre with a new design and an annoying firewall.

It's very different to XP. Although slower, because the threading and the way processes are distributed have been redesigned, it's far more responsive. It's also more stable.

Plus, I use ThunderBird not Outlook. People who are caught by malicious e-mails are idiots asking for trouble.

Perhaps you should try Vista before you make generalised statements. If you compare Vista to when XP was first released, the difference in security is vast.

I tried Vista.
I went back.

And who uses ANY email clients anymore? I've given up, completely, since GMail appeared.

Vista is crap.
Its toxically evil!

Microsoft should pay us trash collectors
to haul it away. To bury it in the landfill
and on top of the decaying and decomposing
Atari bomb of E.T.

What's with all the vista bashing? Its different, that's about all i can say about it. I'm running vista ultimate x64 and have been for months now even before it was released publically. Only real problem i've encountered is that i can't play the old rodent's revenge for win 95 on here -- and i can't really complain as that is really really old. Further, the firewall isn't annoying, and its pretty decent now, much better than the XP firewall. There's a lot more options you can go into now if you want to, but its got the simple easily-accessable layer on top of it all. It has been good to me, and damn is it ever pretty.

Atari? Bomb? Same Sentence? Blasphemy!

My computer won't even run Vista, so I'm kind of stuck with XP. Not a bad thing.

I ran vista beta one my IMB think pad which is no where near the minimum requirements and I got it to run fine however I think the annoyance of its built in firewall is what is stopping the people who live here from getting it. When I installed vista it asked me if I wanted to allow some of the built in programs to run such as explorer.exe

I like the improvements they have made but I do not like their removal of Direct Sound as my IMB don't support their new sound.

It is in my option to wait till at least the first service pack.

Instinct,

go for it and use your Vista.
I'll wait about 6 months until Microsoft
hopefully works out most of the bugs and glitches.

And everybody,
especially you yakyak

oh disbeliever!! take a look at the bomb
of E.T from Atari.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.T._(Atari_2600)

last year there was a retro Game conference
and held at the San Jose Convention center. My sister
Diane and I went. We had a lot of fun checking out
the old video game consoles and re-playing all kinds
of video games. We even played this E.T. from Atari.
After playing a few minutes, this thing was
absolutely awful! No wonder it helped cause
the explosion or implosion of Atari.
My sister and I had more fun playing pong and also
Mattel Intellivision version of Tank.

I ran a beta version of vista on a 433Mhz processor with 256Mb of RAM and it worked perfectly... minus the fancy stuff... right now it really isn't worth the upgrade

What's with all the vista bashing?

Part of it's just me teasing

However, it's nothing new as far as I can tell. The GUI = nothing important, the added features = freely available for windows XP if you know where to look, the security = nothing some decent software or another OS can't offer. The price tag = exorbitant.

Really, I see it as a transition between XP and the next thing after Vista, which I might consider as that will have some of the features that might be worth getting. Still, after being used to so much Open Source software and Linux, I find a price tag hard to justify.

Just my thoughts

The guys behind UAC said on Channel 9 that a lot of programs were being asked to be used in the beta version which shouldn't have been, and that they have cleaned up how it works for the official release. For example the display properties required an admin, which they realised was wrong since it helps to personalise your area (themes, colours, etc).

A lot has been changed between beta and the official version. I will be upgrading to Vista, but maybe not soon because I hear the Geforce drivers are shit. In the mean time I still plan on installing 'the worlds most advanced OS', Solaris!

The Geforce drivers that come with it are -- at first i thought it was cool because it already had drivers, but then i tried playing oblivion and it was all screwy. but no more! they released new drivers in january and they work absolutely flawlessly in every game i've tested it under, among them include (HL2, CS: Source, Oblivion, Starcraft, Unreal Tournament 2004, Doom 3, Warcraft III). I have a Geforce 7900 GTX

I've heard though that their still not that great, and that the ATI ones are far superior.

Well, from what i can tell you of my experiences with my Geforce 7900 and vista x64, they work flawlessly.
