Cower, I think that comment of yours is a little harsh and unfounded.

Do you know the contents of this RPG tutorial? How do you know it was a bad choice? He is also writing an RPG not a book so in a very generalised sense going through an RPG tutorial makes more sense then creative writing ones (and I'm not trying to imply that he shouldn't take a creative writing course).

Even if the RPG tutorial was absolute rubbish and is no real help at all, I still don't think it's a bad thing if it helped to give him ideas and structure to get him started on his RPG.

I disagree. Planting the wrong ideas, and thinking they're right, is a bad way to start. Whether or not it's inspiration or motivation is irrelevant, because being motivated and inspired to do bad work is bad, whether you like it or not.

Also, it's not entirely unfounded - I used to go to RPG Maker forums (I highly doubt he's going to the same one I did ~7 years ago, however). It's mostly morons that breed more morons, and then there are the people who write tutorials on anything beyond the mechanics of the program. They're the ones you shouldn't take advice from. What are the chances that these people know what they're doing? They're fairly low.

Additionally, it's only as harsh as you make it out to be. If I tell you you're doing something wrong, is that being harsh or am I just informing you that you're doing something wrong? Must I say "that's nice and all, but" before I correct you?

I agree you should point out if someone has done something that you think is wrong but only if your attempting to also point out why and potentially how they can go about it in a better or correct way. You only pointed out that he was wrong and that the tutorials were bad with no declared justification behind it. Without reasoning it's just negative.

You've now justified why and it's a fair point and actually I have to agree with your reasons. But on it's own I felt that was a flippant comment.
