I hesitantly put forward Cobra. I like it a lot, and the language and engines are very friendly and capable, but the community is very small (and also friendly and capable ).

DarkBASIC is ...well.. OK, it's just strange to use. Blitz has kept it's paces even though it's been around ever since DBC, Pro just slapped some fancier effects that blitz can just emulate.

No offense to DarkBASIC, but it feels like a step backwards from Blitz3d/max - If you're looking to grow, I'd just move onto something more mainstream like C# and use an engine like Ogre / Irrlicht

I'd use BlitzMax and avoid fiddling with buffers. Aside from that, C++ is the best bet, typically. Or straight C, although there's not much reason to pick C over C++ at this point.

I'd recommend Unity, but there is the whole plugin aspect and it doesn't handle 2D so well, so it's not really ideal for your sort of work, I think.

Flash is fun to use... But it can get annoying every once in a while...

Thought of Java yet?
