Lying Bastard Browsers

This morning, I noticed a spiderbot/spam thing that was using a very very specific HTTP_USER_AGENT string..
The string suggested it was a Mozilla browser, running on Windows, using AppleWebKit, and was Chrome, and Safari..
Which is fucking stupid. Because that definitely doesn't exist..

So I wrote a little "If Mozilla AND Windows AND Apple AND Chrome AND Safari" block that would send folk to the fictional login page.

Apparently Steve's been impacted by this, and no doubt others have too, because it's been quiet around here, today.

So, um..
If you were hit by this, today, then YOUR BROWSER IS A LYING SACK OF SHIT.

oooo - i just saw that. I opened my laptop and started up Edge. There were a number of tabs left open (as I am really messy and forgetful). Two of the tabs I had on SoCoder. The first tab was fine. The second tab (was inactive tab) had a truncated website with a box containing a log in form and not the usual one in the side bar.

Refreshed the page and it went away.

Browsers often have to misidentify themselves for compatibility reasons, even moreso now that YouTube is back to throttling the videos for all non-Chrome browsers.

Yeah I think the newest version of Edge has that sort of browser string, although they're all a bit of a mix now, even version numbers can be misleading...

Real Irony is there are only two browsers. Firefox and the rest. The rest (Chrome, Safari, Edge, and on down the list) are all just variations of the same rendering engine.

Yeah, the main ones all use Mozilla to some extent when it comes to desktop, which isn't a bad thing, remembering all the days of broken CSS support being way worse than it is now.

Librewolf is my fave currently.

I was having too many issues with Firefox, so am using the rest, LOL. Chromium based seems to be working best for me now, after many years of using Firefox. Am really liking the new Opera which I never thought i would say, as I ditched it when it ditched its own rendering engine.

I am very interested in Arc, due the background of Josh Miller. He has a lot of experience he is bringing to the product.

Not a popular one, but I use Edge now. Chromium based but has nice features. Chrome pretty much copies it now ironically, but still prefer Edges implementations. In particular Workspaces and how it handles multiple profiles (as a SharePoint React developer by day these two features alone saves me a ton of time)

I keep Windows itself completely locked down, Edge is not a good choice for me, as it can't be updated due to that. But most reviews nowadays say it is better than Chrome. Who would have thought it would reach a time where MS had one of the best browsers?
