latest project news

nds menu

For those following my progress(both of you), My homebrew menu is coming along nicely, I have added .mod and .mp3 playing, the clock and text colours can be changed, a start folder can be selected and I have added cool reflections under the icons.

You will have to forgive the quality of the screenshot, I had to use my webcam, no emulators are good enough to support all of the features I'm using.

It's a real shame about the quality of the images because that looks really nice.

Typical Spinal fashion! Overdoing everything so it breaks the emulators

Some amazing work going into this, and it's certainly not a project I'd dare attempt. Well done.

yep,yep,yep.

does look awesome.

hey Jay!
what ya say!?

how about rotating web site features/options.
I mean like you press the scrol keys or especially
click a letf/right arrow key and those images rotate
left and right..or maybe perhaps a spherical type rotation
and then highlight onto the image icon and the tool tip or font tip will tell you the feature or next page you can goto.
hmmmmmmmmmmm....goody goody yum yum!

I have just added a mockup of what it actually looks like. I had to use two emulators and paintshop pro for this.

The image gets scaled so I added a link to it, just click the picture.

Could you improve the icon quality, as the icons don't llok as good when pixelated...

It uses the icons from the .nds files, nothing I can do about the quality, I'm using hardware scaling also, so I don't think I will be able to change how the icons look when zoomed. Sorry.

I just tested blurring the icons, it looked crap, I'll not be doing that at all.

Its just an idea, and it might not be a good one, but could you have a few default icons at a higher resolution, for .nds, and music files, and then display the pixelated icon in the info box.

Also, is the a start icon, which is the icon it starts on when it starts up, which says welcome in the info box, with "Copyright spinal - 2007" in the box also...

Overall though, it looks brilliant, fantastic work

The start icon, is always the first file found in whatever your start folder is set to.

As for the higher resolution icons, the way the DS scales sprites, you have to set each sprite to be double size, which centers the image, so for a 32x32 sprite, double size, giving you a 64x64 sprite with a 32x32 image centered. The zoomed icon size is close to 64x64, so I would have to change the icon loading code even more to tell the difference between the hi-res and lo-res icons, not to mention if you have some icons at 64x64 and the ones loaded from the files at 32x32, they will not look good together, you will notice the blockyness of the lo-res icons even more.
as for adding a copyright notice, I could put some sort of [brief] splash screen or something.

Yeah, personally I wouldn't go the "Hi-res Icon" way, it'd cause too many issues, with people wondering why X program doesn't have it's own icon. And then you'd have to check X icon against Y program and keep a huge database of all possible hi-res icons and programs!
There's enough memory complications as it is!

Anyway, they look fine once they're scrolling about, and it's not really THAT bad!
To be honest, It's the best DS menu I've seen so far!

(But then I've only ever seen Datel's crapola menu, which doesn't even bother to show each game's internal icon!)

I think Spinal's keeping the new-features in his In-Development version for the meantime, until he's absolutely sure they work right.
When he first added the Mod playing there was a little corruption in memory. Hopefully he's sorted that but I think he's trying to be sure that it's all working as it should before his next big release.

all information above is assumed, and may not correspond to Spinal's actual response.

I have no problems sharing the current version, but be warned it is not an official version and is quite buggy.

https://www.geocities.com/spinal_cord/menu.zip

There are more features to come, the main problems currently is that mp3s top playing if you scroll about a bit (the fat access kills mp3 playback, I haven't found the mod playing bug that jay mentioned yet, but I haven't looked very hard for it either.
