I think that's more due to them looking at the games already there, as opposed to attempting to start from scratch.
Give them time to piss about with the current stuff, and they should "hopefully" want to try something of their own.

And yes, spinal, I agree. But I think a lot of people come into programming by way of hacking and curiosity.
Part of the reason I got into it was because I was curious about how games were made. Especially "The Sims". Which is interesting, considering what I'm doing now.
Anyways, these "kids" should have started a lot earlier. Their school PCs should have a Ubuntu installation with a mandatory installation of gcc. Possibly g++.
Or Visual Studio C++ Express on Windows. Whatever works.
Tis a shame that kids nowadays aren't taught to code properly - who's going to be making the next generation games?!

And no, I'm not talking about the PMC games, I'm talking about the next AAA games. When Maxis has stooped to "Dark Spore" without Will Wright, and Nintendo have stopped releasing games for 3DS, what's the world coming to?!

I thought it was interesting that, talking to multiple people about PMC, they tend to all have different ideas about what it's for.
A game developer tends to look at it and think it's for writing games.
A non-programmer looks at it as a site for playing games (that happens to be populated with relatively lame games).
A tinkerer looks at it, apparently, as a way to tinker with games. Funny how a single feature you added (though it might not have been as easy as I make it sound) really changed the way a group of people look at PMC. I thought the same thing about SkyBrush: PMC looks more self-contained now, because there's no need to upload files (except perhaps sound). Depending on your audience, this might be either a good or a bad thing.

I don't think these kids understand it much. Their critisism is a bit cynical. I hope they dig in to it more to see what it's really all about.

Still, the teacher should have been able to identify raycasting as a rendering technique, and could have at least recommended "Masters of Doom" as an informal introduction to its application in a game for the first time, or pointed the student to a website for a thorough technical explanation.

The issue, the way I see it, is that the teacher either wasn't able to, or simply ignored the chance to, inform the student about the rendering technique from which the "experiment" had been named.
Not sure which of the two possibilities is worse.

Hm, I've read it too, but that was a long time ago. I can't actually remember it being that offensive? Except for some stuff at the beginning where John and John were mistreated by their dads who didn't like them playing games.
