Well, I guess we'll all have to wait and see what they come up with. I'd say the mobile game market is wide open, provided they have a decent gaming system. With everything the iPhone is capable of doing, there's a good chance they could come up with a nice device. But until we know more info, there's not much we can speculate.

hey lyons,
and everybody else too

here is what I found and was reading

www.roughlydrafted.com/RD/Home/03F96CEB-FAA2-496A-8440-8B9050D672FC.html

but in truth and being honest, right now I don't feel like buying a game console for a very long time. I'll stick with my computers.
Now, if Apple came out with some sort of vintage Apple IIe/IIc and with some the latest hardware and at an affordable price...then, I might consider.

Mobile phone gaming for a very long time has been picked as the next big gaming boom. With Apple now a successful part of the mobile phone industry and getting a lot of things right, it's not suprising if they might make a gaming mobile. That is what I predict. No console or handhelds, instead at most producing something like the N-Gage.

Gaming is also tipped to be a new big aspect of the Mac. EA, the worlds largest games publisher, started bringing out a lot of their catalogue last year for the Mac because of it's recent success due to brand popularity from the iPod.

Toaster,

that was a hell of a funny parody of the IBOX.

also with such companies like Monkey Stone Games.
Founded by the man John Romero.

If it dont let indie developers loose on the workings, then Apple can go and bite themselves.

Agreed, at this moment in time, we don't really need another console..
What we REALLY need is a homebrew device.
Sure, you might all look at that and think "WTF is the probability of that?" But.. Remember that 20 years ago, CPCs, Speccys, C64s, and even Atari STs and Amigas were incredibly commonplace. Homebrew existed on those.. But not as "Homebrew"..

On those, they were as the norm.

Apple wants to take a chunk of marketplace. That's one right there, and it's been missing for a long long time.

...

But it'll never happen.
They're just making sure the whole "Apple Games" thing is safe, now that they're selling the iPod games and such.

GP2X, Jayenkai?

I don't have one, but it sure looks neat, and is definitely classified as a "homebrew device."

How many people worldwide, actually own a GP2X ?.

I'm not sure if it is sold on the high streets, but if it is, as sure as God made little green apples, I have not seen any in the shops yet.

I do like the look of the GP2X, but until I see a company that is marketing their device to the same potential as all the other consoles, then my dosh stays in my bank account.

Although all of us would-be indie developers seem to know the benefits of homebrew games, the companies need to make the general public realise the potential of homebrew gaming.

If those people are convinced, then that would be a good, and interesting way of getting a lot of people off the benefits system, and generating a lot of revenue.

It would also create a lot of business for a lot of colleges, because there are still a lot of people out there who dont even know how games are made. One of my relatives actually thought that games were made in a factory, by geeky, egg-headed scientists. It makes me wonder about the things that schools still dont teach their students.

you're right, Steve.
And it does look impressive and interesting.

But like you said, my dosh...more or less...stays in the bank and for other purposes.

And your relative thought that games are made by geeky egg shaped scientists? I thought it was those aliens from outer space that made the games.
Especially Teenagers From Outer Space

which, by the way was a very terrible and low budge sci-fi movie from the fifties. Only Mystery Science Theater 3000 made it tolerable and funny.

|edit| and I think and even sense that most if not all of these major game companies/publishers want to own everything and buy up, buy out, choke off almost anthing else thats not a huge threat or a big compeititor to them. |edit|

i don't know the answer but this man made a sweet mod to one
link
looks way better than the standard. the new model will have a touch screen aswell.

suppose most people don't realy want to spend a few hundred of euros/pounds/dollars, to buy something that is not advertised very much. but it is a good homebrew console. now if i could only afford one :'(

I've got a GP2X F100

They're neat little machines, and I'm currently developing an updated version of my B'lox! game on it. It's coming along nicely.

It plays host to some fantastic emulators too, so retro gaming goodness is in your hand, without the need for modding or special cartridges etc.
