Socoder -> On Topic -> The Powerbars

Aaah, Powerbars.
An idea that's been stuck in my head for a long long while.
Previously, I'd figured the best way would be a batch of little icons, and that always seemed a really horribly messy way to do it.

Then, a couple of days ago, the "Overall" idea suddenly popped into my head, I slapped myself for not having considered it earlier, and I figured that's probably as good as the idea's going to get.

So, here's the deal.

Every night, when the Poll gets updated, the site will flick through your previous Socoder posts. (ie, it doesn't do it in realtime, it's just once per night.)

First off, it'll completely ignore Forum posts, because, really, nobody gives a shit if you've posted "Yes!" 100 times more than everyone else.
That's not big, and it's not clever.
Post counts suck.

Instead, it counts the other stuff.

Showcases are awarded 15 points, but you can only claim 4.
Tutorials/Articles are also awarded 15 points, and 4 maximum.
Code Snippets will get you 10, with 6 available.
Worklogs also get you 10, but only 3 are allowed.
And then Blogs and Links will both get you 2 points a go, with 5 of each available.

Tallied up, that's your "Power".. or "How much you've been contributing lately."

Ah yeah, that "Lately" part.
It will only count the past 12 weeks.
If you drift off and stop posting, your score drops.
eg, If you don't keep an active worklog, blammo.

The Red Zone is <5, so to get a nice green power bar, you oughta be consistently posting about 1 link per month. That's NOT a lot to ask...

If you want a slightly higher score, use the blog.

And if you want a super score, you're just going to have to start coding!!

All Spammy "I want a happy score" style blogs/showcases/etc will be deleted. This isn't some stupid "Get High!!" competition. It's more the fact that I was getting sick of the "Socoder" newsletter becoming the "Things that Jay did this week" newsletter.

Seems like a good idea! But I don't get this bit:

What's the difference between available and claimable?

Nothing, just wanted to write different words each time, rather than making it look like a copy+pasted list!

I like the overall idea, a system for rating peoples contributions. But I don't think there should be a cap on time or number of contributions. I think people should be able to build up a score over years of posting content.

That would be unfair.

Is there anywhere else to see your powerbar or just on a post?

Good point !. Could it be placed in our profile pages ?.

I don't think putting it in the bit where it shows who's logged-in would be such a good idea, it would get rather over crowded if any thing else got put at the top of the screen.

Just on posts, for now.
I'll add it to the rest tomorrow maybe, just getting some "Patent Wars" work done, since that's been lagging behind for a few... um.. weeks!

Pretty clever idea, but I wonder if it'll take off. We shall see.

How did I get 16 points anyway?

Ah, I misunderstood at first. I thought they both referred to points, but is it actually 15 points per showcase, up to 4 showcases, for example?

(I was thinking 4 points per showcase, up to a maximum of 15 points, which didn't make sense, as 4 doesn't fully divide into 15...)

Hmm, I think I like this idea too, it will definitely tell us who is more active than others.

Hmm, I was going to say more, but it would just not look very good for me...

I think it is a great idea, much better than post counts.

|edit| Nice 30 points
Also what about w.w.

There's a good point! The powerbars could be used to encourage WW entries!

WW's a little trickier to add, since it operates on "name" as opposed to "user ID", but it's not impossible. After all, we've got a "WW Entries" count here!
I didn't think it was worth the hassle the other day, 'cos I was kinda rushing the whole thing, but the next time anyone bothers to enter the WW, I'll take the time to add it in, too.

Why isn't WW based on user id? Because since you changed my name, it doesn't show any of my WW entries.

It's odd, cos my name was also changed but I still have my WW entries numbered.

Not all WW entries are by members here.
Remember, WW was from CW.. It's Pre-Socoder!

And, bugger, forgot to change your name in the WW list

It's at 37! wait till the polls update for the next day, then you get a new score.. Says so, right in my first post!

If it helps, the polls regularly update about 3 hours after you made your post.

It occurred to me and HoboBen in the MudChat yesterday that the forum is as good as it is due it's integration with other SoCoder features. The PowerBars are a good example of this, however I think it would be good to brainstorm other ideas to take this further.

suggestions are welcome. I think I ran out of ideas a couple of years ago
