Getting started with iOS development can be overwhelming, but the App Store is a great way to sell stuff. Depends how serious you are about it.

That's the issue, though... If you ARE serious, it'll be a real bummer when you get naff all sales! Took me 6 months before dumbluck actually struck a tiny portion of the marketplace!

It gets you about 90% of the way there. You still have to tell people about it and promote it, but everyone knows what it means when you say "it's in the app store".

I'd say it's more like 10%, not 90%. Just building it isn't enough, you also have to get sales or it's worthless.

The App Store eliminates most of the annoyances with producing and distributing software. As silly as it seems, just being in the App Store is a huge advantage. Tell your friends about it, get someone to review it, or be creative and you'll be selling in no time. Just don't think you can publish it and have instant success.

Exactly, so just publishing to the App store doesn't remove most of the issues. The biggest one, actually getting people to buy it, is still left.

It might be a good idea to build up a backlog, before you actually try making the sales.
By which I mean, make sure you CAN work with iOS, be sure you CAN build the games nice and quick, and then see where a bulk of say 3/4 apps will take you.
Might be a better deal than popping up a single app, and hedging all your bets.

But, yeah, the idea of self-publishing doesn't make/break you.
Team17 took a while before they became "The Ultimate Amiga Company", but they pretty much did it on their own. If you make good things, people will notice, and it'll all end up nice and profitable!
Just don't make 170,000 versions of Worms...

I wish that were true. I've done all that and more and still only notched up about 100 sales of B'lox! on iOS.

B'lox! on WebOS (Palm Pre) is doing better in the same timescale than on iOS, but still not great. I've just submitted two apps for WebOS (one free) that I plan to release on iOS when I get a spare day to figure out the new XCode! The new apps will hopefully also push B'lox! a bit too.

I have two apps on the iOS app store and they are chugging along okay and getting steady sales... Though, I wont be retiring any time soon mind, lol, at the rate its going, I'll have to wait till I'm 1000 years old!

It's luck of the draw, really.
I'll reiterate my previous point, in a slightly reworded way, for the umpteenth time, and pretend nobody notices my reposting of the exact same fact.

If you're going to be making games for fun, (so.. that's us lot, then!) popping them online, and seeing where it goes, then the only harm is the fact that you have to buy a sodding Mac! (MacMini, cheaper!)
If you're aiming for a business, you've got a fuckload of work ahead of you.

Just go with the flow!
Every sale = 1 more than your PC/DS/Whatever other stuff.
