I don't think it's ethical for police to make money on seized property. It creates a huge conflict of interest. Things which are not illegal should be returned to the owner after the investigation (i.e. not drugs, but cars). Police in America commonly seize things that have almost nothing to do with the investigation because they know they can sell it (and I suspect it's partly to 'get back' at the criminals, police love treating criminals like shit prior to conviction).
