You need an add-on for the wireless 360 pads.

Didn't MS change that with Win7 so Win7 is automatically compatible? I thought it was only XP that needs the "Microsoft Xbox360 Wireless Receiver for Windows"

I don't think you can hook up a wireless controller to Win7. I tried it a few months ago, and it didn't work. I'd just go out and buy a wired controller; (it's what I did) it's only an extra $10, and it lets you use the controller without worrying about batteries or getting it hooked up. A wired 360 controller is plug and play for a windows pc.

On source games, you can type 'exec 360controller' into the console to enable the controller in the game, although it does it automatically in Potal 2.

*shrugs*
My Win7 system has Bluetooth and Wifi, and I sat there for about 5 mins trying to get it to do anything. *shrugs*

If it's any consolation, the wires on the Wired 360 pads are feckin' HUGE!!!

You could also get a cheap fake-Playstation pad for the PC.

Although the 360 pad is excellent, it's also really sensitive (too much for some bits in some games).

Well....then why did they discontinue making the bloody receiver things?
(if they didn't...good luck finding anyone who stocks them)

That's odd. I wonder why.
I wouldn't recommend getting a ps3 pad. They really really really suck balls.
I have one and tried connecting it to my computer. It worked pretty well, but the pad itself is horrific to use.
I use the 360 controller on my pc because of its ergonomics, and the ps3 controller really sucks in that general area.

Already have PS3 controllers, so that was the motivation there. Also tried Wiimote, an other fail right from the start. I need to control the PC from the other end of the room (it's being moved into the front room and getting hooked up to the TV) so wireless is the only real specification I have. There is plenty of software for controlling the mouse cursor and a range of keyboard keys from a joypad, that that part wont be a problem.
