But the Pi isn't really a games console.  (you could use it for playing games, but that's not its primary function)

shroom But the Pi isn't really a games console.I do agree with what you're saying but in the same way that Raspberry Pi can be used for gaming, the OUYA could be used for software other than just games; a game console is just a computer without a keyboard after all.

True, but what they are primarily sold / marketed as affects their sales. The Pi is marketed as an affordable computer for programming and stuff, whereas this OUYA is marketed as a games console. While each could be used for the other as you say, their intended use will affect their sales, particularly if the one marketed as a games console has no games, as 9572AD suggested.

The Game Gadget was around for about two weeks before the internet exploded with vitriol painting it a worthless scam. I think all the interested developers bailed after that. The Ouya will be a machine which will feature dozens of Pong clones at various amusing prices. It has the potential for a talented developer to release something interesting occasionally. It will certainly not be the instantaneous revolution of original gaming the majority of backers believe it to be. Although I do like the sound of OUYA I don't regret pre-ordering the Raspberry Pi, I just have to wait patiently for it to arrive now.

The problem with games consoles by smaller independent companies, is that the don't gain enough popularity. They don't end up in stores, they don't sell millions of units, they don't entice the big game devs. The outcome is similar (or worse) to the homebrew communities around existing big name consoles. Most people will never hear of this, no-ones friends will have one. Not to mention the whole 'bases on android' bit. Remember all those 'its OS is linux so everything will be excellent' handhelds that keep failing? -=-=- Check out my excellent homepage!

The RPi has pinouts that can be controlled as input and output, very useful for robotics and stuff and although it's perceived as a Linux box, it can be programmed at bare-bones level using Assembler language.

RPi does XBMC. RPi does MAME. RPi doesn't do Android yet, but could if someone would port it. Any of those things puts a couple projects in mind.

These guys have already raised $4million, which they never have to give back. the ouya project will make a lot more money if it fails than if it actually happens. They have no incentive to actually start the project, never mind finish it. Remember, most kickstarted hardware projects fail, especially when they're started by people who have no experience in the field.
