I used to do iron and steal construction with my brother in-law when I was younger, we used to build fire escapes, metal staircases etc... But we never got to work on anything like that Meccano bridge with all those giant nuts and bolts, most of our work was held together using arc welding.

Retweet!

The Meccano bridge is lowered into place in Little Lever, Bolton t.co/kbNiI08a

Not sure what "lowered into place" bit's all about, but whatever!

|update| Woot! Meccano on telly!! It's just been on BBC NorthWest News |update|

Let's replace all bridges, buildings and roads with Lego, Meccano, Duplo and Sticklebricks. We could replace all the politicians with Weebles.

Anyway, they've done a cracking job

Our bridge is open! \o/yeay\o/

Would love to have gone to the opening, but I'm still not quite healthy enough, just yet. Bah..

Two lovely little pics of the bridge, from the opening.

This bridge sucks, it isn't *real* Meccano!

Would've taken a lot of patience to make it out of real Meccano. Those fucking nuts never damn well go on, first time.. Always have to be seated PERFECTLY before they'll wind onto the screws.

There should be more things like this in the world. Houses built from Duplo, Boats made from LEGO and planes made from black box flight recorder material!

Not to rain on the parade, but it looks like about an 8 foot footbridge. Could ye not simply jump over the wee crik at the bottom? I grew up near a town half the size with a footbridge at least three times as long across an actual river, and no one made a fuss when that was rebuilt. Granted, it didn't look like Meccano, but this seems a large fuss for a tiny bridge.

I dunno...with all the attention it got I was just expecting to see cars crossing it and ships going underneath.

I do like the raised ends above the embankments. The geniuses who built the footbridge in Blanchardville started the ends level with the banks of the river and when it floods (every Spring) the bridge is under water.

This is Little Lever. Nothing else happens, here. When something like this occurs, we all rally round, and make sure we get our 15 seconds in the spotlight, because its going to be another long while before any news crews give a shit about us, again!!

The last time anything BIG happened, they were demolishing the former Pet Products factory, and stumbled upon a large metal archway, which had the name of the former mill's owner blazoned across the front.
Local Counciller Hornby, and a few other local well-known's took it upon themselves to halt all demolishion work, and try to preserve the sign.
It now rests in the village green, welcoming all into our lovely boring village.
About The Arch

I was going to post a StreetView link to it, but the StreetView images are hideously out of date, and don't have the sign in them!! Shocking!!
