Socoder -> Off Topic -> Theme Selection Changes

If you're accessing the site right now, and things are freaking out, don't worry!

I'm currently changing the way that themes work.

Rather than have a list of numbered directories, I'm having nice labelled ones that are easier to keep track of. There's also a single .txt file listing available themes, and I'm working on a nice way to pick the themes, too. (you might remember I attempted a Realtime CSS Switcher on the temporary site, a while ago)

I've also seperated the "Garden Bar" icons from the themes, so that you can pick those seperately from the rest of the design.

I'll update when everything's working nicely.

OK, the new "Site Theme" option is now available on the left.

Click a theme, pick a favourite theme, pick a Bar-Icon set, Save.
Sorted!

Jay, could you put the smilies in there as well, instead of in the profile?

OK, smilies are in there, now, and I made each smilie pack clickable, along with the gardenbars.
Click a smilie pack or gardenbar to update it's drop-down menu, much easier than the "look, then pick" way that it was the other day.

There's also a new CSS Test zip package included, with the new 3 package layout thing included.
Edit-My_Theme for the main CSS/Layout
Edit-My_GardenBar if you'd like to make one of those, and
Edit-My_Smilies for if you want to do those, too.

Feel free to design+send some my way. They'll be added ASAP.

hmm I've looked over the template and it seems very much out of date. Ie. the front page.
Any plans to give us a new version?

He said that if we had any ideas to tell him about them.

Yeah, the frontpage basically just uses the ForumA and ForumB tables, so I didn't think there was a need to do that. If you'd prefer I did, though. Guess I'll have to do it, then

As garand says though, if you have any interesting ideas that can't be done via CSS, let me know (maybe send a small html version, or some pictures, or whatever) and I'll have a play.
There is a "Site Script" engine that's actually ready for implementation. I mean, really ready! It's there. It even works! It just needs some good ideas, that don't all end up looking like the current site! If I can find a good use for the engine, I don't mind the extra cpu-usage that it may/may not end up using.

I'm currently making a new Socoder theme, and I quite like it Maybe it's the seven pints I've just drunk, or the fact this is the first time ever (and I really do mean ever) I have seen a cascade style sheet file (I presume that's what it is), but I'm having a little trouble with what means what in the css file. Could you release a more commented version? Stating which headers are in regard to which values?

I am able to work out most of the colours, but some are so similar, it can be hard to tell which section your colour will affect.

Okeydoke..
I'm having a play, right now, with a neater template file.
I was going to say "Gimme a minute or two", but it's taken me half an hour, already, and I'm not quite done yet!

I've actually tried making a theme but was too fussed because the stylesheet was too simplified!

Usually, say for forum post, I'd have #poster(leftbit), #postername, #posteravatar, #posterinfo, #poster_sig ,#post and #postdate in my CSS.
(for those who haven't looked at it, jay's CSS for the above is #forumC and #forumD).

I guess I like being awkward

What would be best is to write up a html form which allows users to input values for certain elements and have the elements displaying above each input. Perhaps update it at the same time with a little javascript? Then finally generate the css at the end?

hmmm...

#forumC, the left side, where my avatar is. #forumD, the right side, where my post is.

It's simple!

If I have..
#poster(leftbit), #postername, #posteravatar, #posterinfo, #poster_sig, #post and #postdate

Would anyone ever actually make use of all that?

OK, Template theme is (finally!) finished.
It's taken the place of the default edit-my_theme, inside the main buildset download, but if you'd rather download it seperately, it's available on it's own here.

I tried to make a ShroomCoder-style-compatible Garden Bar (as Jayenkai's is the only one that doesn't clash), but I couldn't think of the best way to do it...

To make the others more compatible with the other styles Jay, could you make them so that the background colours of the Garden Bars are transparent. Cos at the moment, the background colours only work with the style they came with...

But with IE6(yes people still use it) transparency doesn't work.

GIF transparency does work with IE6. I am using it at the moment, and all GIF transparency works fine. Of course, this is just for me... your version may be different.
