I voted XP, plainly because I'm still not used to Win-7 after I migrated.

The poll does not mention any criteria however:

With windows 2000, it was faster to install and used less ram. the only drawback was that you had to have a driver disk or CD when getting new peripherals. Very, very few blue screens with windows 2000 but those were easily discernible issues. I would probably still use this OS however many companies will not support the OS with drivers let alone other things. It might work.

Windows XP was more problematic than windows 2000 and there were more crashes for me than windows 2000.

With Windows 7 I was surprised to find myself at ease using it since I had been sold on windows XP and found comfort in using windows XP finally. Windows 7 I never chose to move to, I was forced to use it when I had my laptop replaced. It really bugged me when companies put together their install distros that had to format the disk AND a recovery partition. This made the install times huge. I went from a 35 minute complete CD install using XP or before to 2 hours. When I tried the smaller install option, it left out certain drivers that were important. When I tried using those partitioning tools to make a smaller 260 Gig partition within a 1 terabyte drive, they failed. Most of the time the partition was converted from its native format to a simple partition. When that happened on my machine(s), the recovery partition would not work forcing me to use the DVD disks to reformat the drive when it needed formatting for some reason.

Windows 8 I've never used and like I've mentioned before with other operating systems, I do not want to move to the platform. Unfortunately that will change for me at some future point for some reason. The only good point that I know of at this time about the OS is that it uses less ram than windows 7. I was told this, I do not know personally.

Windows 8 boot times blow 7 out of the water. Which is the reason I made the switch. Once you change some settings to hide all the metro crap and get used to the fact that there is no longer a start button, it really is nicer in my opinion. I was going to stay on 7 as well, but am glad I didn't

Is that all?

I might well stick with Window 7 for long time to come until Window 9 come out!

Dont mess up Mircofsoft as you learn from horrible window 8!

I never knew it booted up quick. All I ever knew of was the Ram usage.

What ever happened to those people that used to bench test these things in various configurations for the masses?

We all could use that now

With regard to todays poll: Most will probably select windows because you can adjust it more.
With apple you can do this but your are confined in some areas as in the past. But that might have changed.

A lot of speed issues with Win-8 is probably due to a crap HDD.

That too steve. On other sites I'm being told that there is a substantial speed increase if using a SSD in my machine or any machine.

I never knew that manufacturers made a SSD for my type, let alone in a decent price range if what I was told was true.

Speed on new Lappy is as follows.
If I hit the power button, it takes about 8 seconds to reach the password-input screen, and then from there another 15 or so to reach "Ready for use" status (ie, desktop loaded, sticky notes appear, can run chrome!)

Given that the previous lappy used to take well over a minute to reach "Ready for use" status, that's one heck of an improvement.

You can turn off the password screen if you don't want/like it Jay.

My Win 8.1 lappy goes from turned off to running FireFox in around 8-10 seconds. My old lappy used to take about a minute from off to useable (and I was pleased with that compared to the machine before).

I'm very happy with Win 8.1

Nah, I don't mind the password screen. Serves it's purpose!!

.. Was a hell of a chore trying to remember my old MSN account's password, though!! It's still linked to my Softhome.net email address!!!

Also with windows 7, to have the OS work smoother for me, I had to use the optimize for performance option.
Without that I might be having some real issues.

Still, I cannot figure out what virtual disk size is best to use. I know that there's a let windows configure your page file for you but that's annoying since it can pop up at times stopping your whole creative processes.
