Socoder -> On Topic -> Monitor ''Hz''

Dave is looking for a new monitor, and has been for about a month, now. It's getting pretty stupid, the number of monitors he's looking at.
Today, I managed to weasel the following piece of information out of him.
.. He's been looking for screens with "120Hz" refresh rates.

.. !?
I argued with him for a good while, that "refresh rate" is no longer an issue with LCD screens, and that the more important thing is the individual pixel "response time", but he was adamant that he wants a 120Hz screen..

Bizarre.. But is he right?
I've no idea what makes a good monitor, anymore.
What are your thoughts on the subject?!?

Refresh rate can only be as good as the pixel's response can allow, so I guess that pixel response time is king there.

Max resolution and physical size are what I'll go on, hdmi and vga input is a bonus.

Depends on whether you want to avoid motion blur or not.

Never noticed it on any monitor I've owned thus far, aside from ancient CRTs decades ago of course.

I've got a 144Hz monitor (www.benq.com.au/product/monitor/xl2720z/) and I do find it is easier on the eyes.

Also if you play first person shooters a lot it feels so much smoother.

I always ask myself 3 things:

1) Is it the size of monitor I require?

2) Is it a well known brand?

3) Has it got a very good response time? To avoid motion blur.

All 3 then I buy.

I'm not even fussed about #2, if I'm honest. For a Telly, you want a decent setup, but for Monitors they're all pretty much the same tech underneath.
