Windows 10's official release is apparently imminent. I've heard some systems are already downloading it, but am unsure how to check on that.

Thought I'd start a thread, so we can all grumpily whinge about things being new, and how we don't like the new things, and how we're all getting old and our eyesight's failing, but it's definitely not our fault, and is definitely just Windows being shit...

Rant, Rave, Whinge and Gripe away.
It's the Windows 10 thread!!

They can stick Windows 10 right up their curly shit pipe, I'm doing fine with Windows 7.

I finally got that W10 icon to show so I could check if my laptop is compatible. Turns out SP1 had a bunch of trouble installing. Not only that, but once you have the icon, it would load the program unless you have IE11 installed and not one person on the entire internet thought to mention it.

The other day my little Windows icon grew to a half screen advert, spouting a load of crap that I skimmed before saying "Meh!" then exited.

Yeah, It's one of those "I'll wait until someone else confirms backwards compatibility and lack of snooping" before I even think about jumping across.

MY laptop is freshly restored, so theres no harm in me giving it a go. If it's crap then I'll just restore w7 again.

I'm looking forward to it really, looks to be what Win8 should've been, and I've read reviews and they seem pretty positive.

As well as the fact that it is a free upgrade, which is to be the last "complete" release for windows as everything in the future will just be via Windows Update, I personally think you'll be daft not to take up the offer, especially if you have a newish system!

Cant see why your old key would stop working, it's not like you're forced to validate your old windows version online.

M$ stated that you could not go back to a former version of Windows if you take the upgrade. I'm at work now, so haven't got time to find the source for that. Maybe that's changed now though. M$ have been known to make U-turns occasionally...

Though, obviously if you've got the Windowx 7/8 whatever install disc you can!

"Your upgrade is reserved" is all I'm getting from this thing. Bah..
A progress bar would be nice!

Hmmm....

Paintshop Pro's suddenly stopped working.
That's been perfectly fine for the past decade or so, and it's suddenly started acting really weird, asking for a "User Directory", then failing to start.
I have a sneaking suspicion that Win10's pre-installer is doing something behind the scenes.
...

.. and it's not helping!!!

it seems you can roll back if your not keen:-

Though, I do think the options laid out all depends on what type of license you have (retail, oem)

Still no sign of it installing, other than that odd PSP breakage.

As far as "nothing they can do", they could change their database so that your old product license key becomes a Windows 10 one, instead of a Windows7 one. Then when you try to go back yourself, your product key will no longer be valid.
... I imagine..

How can they? When booting from a DVD made a few years ago on a system made more than a few years ago. It's like saying I wouldn't be able to boot up my SNES because Nintendo wants everyone to own a Wii U.

My laptop cam with windows 7 preinstalled. Recoverable and 100% usable without ever needing to go online. Again, there is nothing Microsoft can do to prevent me reinstalling that version of windows because when installing, then key is checked against whatever gubbins is used for that sort of thing, be it random hardware configuration or just a plain hard coded code in the installer, none of which have ever needed to be verified online for any reason other than downloading official updates.

I don't recall if that version was originally activated at any time, but it's been reinstalled a whole bunch of times, once without ever going online for about 6 months, with ill effects. So I resubmit the question, How can Microsoft tell my install DVD that the code on the sticker is invalid when my computer is completely offline at the time of installation?

Windows checks the code every day or so, until it's sure it's valid. It does it all in the background, and .. IIRC XP was the first to do it silently, so as not to disturb the user experience.

Try formatting then booting, and NOT connecting your computer to the internet for about a month. You'll see that good old popup, eventually!

So worst case, I can 'officially' downgrade the key...

Can I roll back to Windows 7 or Windows 8 after upgrading to Windows 10?

Yes. You can roll back to the previous version of the operating system from the recovery partition or by using the recovery media that came with your system. Alternatively, Microsoft will offer the "Go back to the previous version of Windows" option in the Recovery settings. The setting will only be available when the system was upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8.[/cuote]

Meanwhile, I SWEAR, I can't live without PaintShop Pro.
I can't figure out why the damn thing suddenly stopped working, and I temporarily switched to GIMP for a few hours, before going "FUCK, I CANNOT LIVE WITH THIS!!"

I downloaded the Demo for PaintShop Pro X7.(eg 17.. Previous edition, PaintShop Pro 7!)
It installed and ran ok, and after about half an hour of trying to find the "Change the fucking colourscheme!! FUCK!!" option, I managed to get PSPX7 looking and acting like PSP7.

So, I did the improbable, and PAID for PaintShop Pro X7!
£59.99 to replace a piece of software that I bought whilst at college, over a decade ago, which was running perfectly fine until this morning!

On the one hand WTF!?!..
On the other hand.. I've had over a decade's worth of use out of PSP7, and over 300 games, too. It's about time I bothered to give Team-PSP a little teensy bit of a reward for their work.

... I should probably stop spending, now..
