My PC died  hoping it’s just the PSU, I was planning on building a new one last month but held off for the new AMD CPUs…

Yeah it's bad timing, but I had budgeted for both. Last week a breaker tripped and thought nothing of it, but now I think it might have been the PSU... It was 7 years old, first time that has happened to one of my builds...

New PSU install.. a Corsair RM750E. Should have been a straight forward swap, but apparently the Corsair didnt like the old PSU's cables :? Never seen that before. I had the new brand new motherboard and CPU cables installed, the new PCI cables installed... and reusing the old SATA ones, the motherboard had power (the RGB was flashing it's thing), pressed the power and the fan's spun up then stopped and the PC didnt boot Thought it was the motherboard or CPU cable not connected right so spent a bit of time playing around with those...I then did the proper debugging, plugging in only motherboard and CPU, the PC powered up... plugged in the GPU, PC powered up... plugged in the HDDs, PC didnt boot - WTF! I then changed the cables other to the new set and it all worked - phew!

Yeah looks good, booted up today without issue... Now when I build the new PC next month, I dont want to mess the new build with installing the old SSD/HDD to transfer the data, I normally have both PCs running and transfer the needed files/configs etc, so I might need to buy a cheapish PSU for the old PC - Any recommendations? Are "Bronze" PSU that bad? (I've always bought Gold +).

Yay! I would imagine Silver or Gold are all good, just be sure there's more than enough juice available as it does reduce over time. I think Bronze reudces a bit quicker over time, not sure? -=-=- Web / Game Dev, occasionally finishes off coding games also! |

How half-dead is the PSU? Does the old PC have a gfx card? And does the old PC have onboard gfx? Could you remove the GFX card, revert to on-board, and have the system run long enough like that? -=-=- ''Load, Next List!''

The old PSU is fully dead, no power was being supplied to the motherboard at all, and I tried the paperclip test, nothing at all happened. Yeah the PC has onboard as well as GPU card, yeah that’s a plan to reduce cost of a spare PSU, get a smaller wattage one, I’ll see how the onboard graphics are. Thanks Jay. Thanks Cyan, hasn’t seen too many silvers around, I’ll have another look at the local computer shops.
