Looks like syntaxbomb forum is closed now ...

IMHO - It would be nice if it stayed in Read only mode

Wow.. what happened??

Hi guys, before gossip starts, here's the reason :

Recently I was getting hassled for payment of the competition from 2022 which I couldn't honour when I hit bad financial difficulty. I explained that I was really really sorry and was hoping to rectify that but currently was trying to get the forum comps going again. He flipped his lid and posted shit on the forum and then other dived in on top to blast me. So I just couldn’t be bothered anymore with trying to keep the forum running and putting out fires when adults turn into children and throw their toys out of their prams followed by having a go at me and demanding their accounts be deleted.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. I'm off to concentrate on other things and definitely won't be returning to running community forums.

Long live SoCoder

Until the next time...

Aaah, shit..

Well, yeah, I guess that's going to leave you kinda ticked off about the whole endeavour.
I do hope you can at least switch off, now. It'll probably linger and play out in your mind for the next short while (if you're like me, probably months!!)
But.. You know what.. That's not on you. If people can't understand situations like you were in, then ..
I honestly don't know what to say to people like that.

At times like these, I typically go for a Red Dwarf marathon, or stupidly loud music or something.
Just drown it out.

I do hope you're ok.
*hugs*

..im very sad to hear this, that some tiny bunch of euros can cause closure of such great place..if i knew this, ill pay those claims, just let that nice coding place to live..Im really sad to lose all contacts with folks there..

EDIT:
Is there any other place that SuntaxBomber folks are hanging around??

Yes, I'm sure there are many that are sad to see it go (including me).
Having a good Moderator would have helped alot too. Like the Mod that was on The Game Creators forum.
He kept a level head, was fair and when needed he was also firm. He was a member on SB too.
The last thing a forum needs is a Mod that throws more fuel on the fire.
At Qube, maybe after you have had a break and some cooling off time, you might feel differently.
If so then I vote for Virtual Nomad to get the Mod job, if he wants it....
Anyway, I hope it all works out for everyone (except the trouble makers! LOL) Cheers!

I agree with this. In fact, bring it back right now and simply share issue in general discussion as those competitions were subject of general discussion where folks voted it out, and it can be sorted out quickly..small matter really..

If the SB community would like to use this thread as a way to help decide on a path forward, then I'm open to that, but with a rule of ... no whining and grumbling and picking on Qube.

If not for Qube, the SB community wouldn't have been there in the first place, never mind lasting as long as it has.

I'm pretty sure Qube is extraordinarily proud of the community he's built up, and having to pull the switch can't have been an easy thing to do. Think about his mindset, right now, and try to consider things from both sides.
If you ever want Qube to return, at the very least, give a thought about his mental health.

Sorry to hear that Qube, I know I never posted much over the years but I did appreciate the site existing.

I am sorry you had to deal with shit like that.

That you ever had actual prizes for the competitions speaks to your character. We all know in the old days, coders would be happy just for the bragging rights of having won a community competition. Shameful that somebody blasted you for falling on hard times and not being able to honor it. Some community spirit and way to support your brother in the community when he is going through some shit.

Hang in there, Qube. Nobody here thinks bad of you and never will. God Bless you and your family.

Ole' Kuron is popping back out until near the end of the year when I will pop in and make a post to trigger the automated birthday shout out from SoCoder. May sound pathetic, but the Birthday shoutout is the only recognition I get since wifey died four years ago. No BDay wishes from family. SoCoder is it.

Ole' Kuron can be found on BlueSky @kuron

I agree. I just dont understand folks who are chasing things like that. And now, whats good in it ? You got your prize, whoever you are? Happy now? As i said before, ill be glad to pay off that creep, just make that forum back Cube. And ban that creep for good.

Jay & Qube were the ones keeping the community together and still flying the flag long after everything fell apart and did so for decades.

Mark made an honorable and valiant effort at a comeback, but now with Mark sadly gone, it really sucked the wind out of what was left of the community, as it is hard for many to think of using the products without getting sad about Mark.

I talk to Jay very often (probably bug the hell out of him, but he is too polite to say so), but haven't talked to. Qube in ages, but a huge thank you to both for helping keep the community going for so long.

Thank you Qube & Jay!

I found the original post cached, basically the issue was more about the breach of trust than about the money itself. What happened is sad, and damaged all of us (I have been damaged, too, because I made several posts on SyntaxBomb forum that are now lost), but honestly, I think the complaint was justified.

The real loss is that of yet another community around Blitz.
The forum had a lot of good answered questions and insight for people new to Blitz products and other languages.
I had just spent several hours writing an example to help with a question in Blitz regarding hash tables only for it to be trashed in retaliation.

I don't know what "childish" things were going on just before closure. (I can't speak for things said in private)
I saw one person claiming that another for cash competition shouldn't started when the last didn't pay him.
I did see the "deleting in 3 ... 2 ... 1" message just prior and talking about people being babies and throwing toys out of the "pram"
However, the way the closure was done in itself was exactly the same kind of childish behavior.
No real warning, just went from 0 to 100 being reactive.

The deletion was a childish, caviler, vindictive slap in the face to everyone who tried to build a community there.

How many times are the Blitz users going to be thrown away?
The language family has already lost its driving force and now fracturing any communities around it are endangering what little community is left.
We already lost one forum, then a fit of blind anger just killed another.

..forum managed to capture quite a lot of blitzers, and it really felt like ol B3D forum..a lot of knowledge and skilled folks in all areas...very nice..very sad about outcome of this..
