Today is "Don't be a f'king thief" day.
Or, rather, Microsoft decided that, today.. Just for a change... we shouldn't steal things..

So, QOTD : What didn't you steal today?

Haha! I knew because I saw the banner on thepiratebay website

(though, in fairness, I was looking for some Creative Commons licensed stuff)

I bought some, instead.

Was going to top up my card, today, and get a copy of Geometry Wars 2 (Because I suck really badly at Geometry Wars 2, and am pathetically expecting to be marginally better at the second.)
Unfortunately, I forgot to take my card to work with me, to top up, so that's that plan down the pan!

Well done!
I'm playing Saints Row, so I have stolen quite a few cars.. And some jewels, and robbed a couple of stores..
But I haven't copied any software, so that's ok!!

I wonder if the "Knock-Off Nigel's" took any notice of it.

I didn't Spore, thats for sure.
Didn't want my computer to get DRMed/SecuRomed
and neither pay for a high priced, dumbed down
toybox gaming experience of rent to own game.

The day has only just started for me, so in honour of this I will chose not to steal any of the free water or stationary from work.

No, it wasn't.

When economic times get more intense and harder
not just for US but other nations as well, people will have
less disposable income and will be more concerned with the bare necessities. Some will, unfortunately and sadly, will turn to piracy for cheap and free escaspism and entertainment.
And since the debacle of Mass Effect, Far Cry 2, and especially Spore and now Dead Space, others: the rent to own business model and pay as you go for more content and playable game features admitted by CEO John Riccitiello, draconian tracking measures and control with internet activation with DRM/Securom malware, and to ruin and destroy the second hand and used game market which violates the First Sale Doctrine, and EA over-all plans and designs to encourage/influence/pressure/force consumers into the console market-->some PC gamers will get fed up and tired of EA doing this crap and illegal and criminal activities and for EA being the pirates and will and have downloaded cracks on the pirate bay and other pirate sites so they can play the damn ficking game they paid for in this first place! and also to get rid of the DRM malware too, and hopefully to fix any of the damage caused by the DRM/Securom in the first place.

So, show some sense
Lots of stuff nowadays is overpriced and overhyped crap.
And especially in these rough and hard times. And they are
going to get worse and bad, really bad. A lot of people have or will have to learn to spend smarter, make lifestyle and consumer changes, and will have devise altenate and legal means of acquiring inexpensive forms of music and games too.

Have a good day.

Actually, AAC is pretty decent especially at low bit rates (But 128 kbs!!! Even *I* wouldn't stand for that - 192 kbs or nothing!)

Though any *protected* media format is a complete pain in the arse. I can't wait until Amazon's DRM-free online music store launches in the UK.

iTunes refuses to let me use my prepay Mastercard, so it's their own damned fault!!!

..

(Although, we do have iTunes cards available down the street... But that means leaving the house!!!)

I've been using Play.com's little mp3 purchase thing. Sure it's not quite the masterpiece of musical selection that iTunes is, but at least it works!!

It depends on the song. About 1/4 of my songs are 256kbps. The rest are 128kbps, which I believe is near "cd quality", so it's not that bad.

It probably depends on the record company's preference.

All my stuff is in 1411kbps WAV; CD quality.

I prefer a) to have my music in decent quality and b) to have tangible evidence of my music so that is why I choose to buy the CDs.

On the topic of stealing.... I may or may not have some films of the go... That is partly because cinemas are so horrifically expensive (imo).

:S

1411kbps has got to be a huge file. I think anything more than 256kbps is overkill, unless you have some amazing speakers or are just an audiophile.

Here is what I'm going to say about piracy. Stealing and then blaming it on the high price it costs for them is not a good excuse. If you can't afford it, then you just don't get the luxury of having that media. I'm not the kind of person who hates those who pirate, frankly I could care less because the companies who own the content are assholes. I just think blaming the cost is a poor reason.

I use piracy to preview.

If an artist or company or whatever hasn't created something I think is worth my money, I won't purchase it. The up-side to this is that I've become a fan of many bands I would have never risked spending money on first (Radiohead, Ben Folds Five, The Beatles even!). And being a musician, a coder, or even just a knowledgeable person, I realize that these people work their asses off and should be rewarded, and I feel good purchasing their product, sometimes even the very next day. It's in this way that I think the system really works. Artists making us pay for shitty work is just as much theft as the customers who are pirating.

'Least that's my two cents.

I'm 99% sure this wasn't the point of MS's "Don't be a pirate day"!

Go figure.

I'm going to close this topic before it goes super-crazy!
