Does anybody know how to make Notepad default save to unicode so it does not have to be set for each new file?

Notepad is definitely there in my Windows 10. I just checked.

As for UniCode? No idea.

In found this while looking if notepad++ could do it. It shows a description how to do it for the regular notepad.

Wow, thank you Pakz. Going to try that and will report back.

I am saving a lot of things at the station and need the unicode to preserve the emojis.

Okay, I created C:\windows\shellnew and copied the file there and did everything else. And it will work if you are in file manager and right click and select create a new text file. But who does that?

I click on Notepad and start typing. ANd of course the above hack does not work when using Notepad this way.
