Venous Aneurysm

That's right guys, time to tell you about another lump I have!

I have had a lump on my foot for many years now, I never though much of it, except to prod it now and then and say 'eww'. For years, my girlfriend has told me to stop prodding it and that's it's only a vein. Anyway, I asked my doctor about it, well, I say 'my doctor' but I don't care much if I see the same one each time, so I just ask to see whoever can fit me in first. Anyway, whichever doctor it was at the time, though it was some sort of cyst and offered to syringe it there and then, so I said, yeah, why not... Only to discover that he was wrong, "Oh, it's just a big vein" he said.

Anyway, that was a while ago, and it's started bugging me, not causing any actual pain, but I can feel it pressing on my shoe, I can feel the skin tighten around it when I walk barefoot, and well, it looks weird. Anyway, I asked the doc if it can be removed, he asked to see it so I showed him, "I've never seen one of those before!" - You know you're going to have an interesting time when a doctor says that to you He did however know exactly what it was and passed a message on to a local hospital so I can get it removed.

After googling the thing, it seems its quite rare to get one of these on your foot...

Venous aneurysms are rarely mentioned in the literature. Regarding those in the foot region, only 4 cases have been published so far. We report on the clinical and diagnostic features of 2 young women showing venous aneurysms in the first part of the long saphenous vein on the right back of the foot. In both cases, sclerotherapy was successfully performed.

Anyhow, here is a photo of it from a couple of angles, once it is removed, I'll post a picture of the scar too.

Looks pretty 'eww!' to me. Good luck getting it removed. In the meantime, you could try being officially considered disabled, and get the best parking spots!

Yeah, I got that from Corner Gas

Interesting, I didn't expect it to be that large. So how was it that doctor #1 thought to remove it?, did he stab it and then upon seeing blood everywhere go "oh, uh.. my bad"

He stuck a needle in and took out a syringe full of blood, once he did, he said quite calmly "Oh, I didn't expect that! it should have been yellowy".

LOL... Don't ever see your doctor if you have a lump on your shoulder then, he might remove your head !.

Kind of reminds me of my doctor surgery, they talk crap too !

If my doctor was to remove a lump on the face, it would be like... "OOPS!, I think that may have been your eyeball !"

- Update -

I should have done this a little while ago, but I saw the specialist at the hospital, told him the same as I told my GP. I even mentioned that my GP had never seen one before, at which point the doc told me "Well, I'll just have to go get a colleague because I've never seen one before either!" So now I have two doctors prodding my foot, and lifting my leg up in the air etc.

- Update 2 -
I now have my appointment to go back for a couple of scans, first an ultrasound to assess my bloodflow. I'm assuming this is because its a vein we're dealing with. A few days after that, I have to go for an MRI of my foot/leg. According to the letter I got, this will take 30-50 minutes. Now, anyone who knows me, knows I can't sit still for 5 minutes, let alone 50. This may indeed be the worst part. upto 50 minutes without moving my foot!! I can't even do that in my sleep!

50 minutes?! foook.
Well, so long as it shows something up, and lets them deal with it properly, it'll be worth it.

I doubt the scan will take anywhere near that long, they probably mean the entire MRI session may take that long (i.e. waiting).

Trust me, that's how long a scan can take. I've had quite a few of them in my lifetime, and they really do expect you to sit still for up to 40 minutes at a time !

I'm not sure if they still do the bit where they inject a tracer fluid in your arm, and tell you to come back after 4 hours.

I hope the strap my foot down or something...

Is the tracer fluid the stuff that makes you feel like you need to pee? Such a weird feeling.

Also, only 4 cases known. That's pretty awesome - feel special.

I was told by the nurse that it was some kind of radioactive (but harmless) stuff. The tissue somehow soaks it up, so that the machine can detect it.

The first time I had it was on my 21st birthday. They said it has no effects on the body. They even told me that I can quite safely go for a birthday drink, and it would not effect the fluid. But I was driving that afternoon, so booze was off the menu !

- Update -

Went for my ultrasound today, was almost exactly what I expected. Looking at the vein blown up cross section of the thing was a little weird. Made it look huge. I only just thought now, while typing this, I should have took my camera and got a couple of snaps of the screen. Oh well.
One thing I did like about the whole thing though, the sound of a working pulse being detected by the machine, kinda cool.
The doctor said there's nothing 'wrong' with the veins in my leg and foot, specifically, nothing wrong with the swollen vein, other than the fact that it is there of course.
And yet again "I've never actually seen one of these", that makes 4.

- Update again -

MRI today, no injection of radioactive chemicals, but I did have a cod liver oil capsule taped to my foot! Apparently that's good enough to show the specialist what he/she's looking at.
They stuck a plastic cage thingy over my foot and jammed it fool of foam rubber so I couldn't move it, slid me half into the machine and told me to stay as still as I could for about half an hour. What a boring half hour that was.
The first thing I noticed, was that the machine is air conditioned, so I have a cold draft wofting about my foot, which starts to tickle a bit, that was fun, trying to keep my tickling foot from moving. The cage ting they put around my foot seems to be for a right foot, not a left one, so it tilts inward slightly, rather than outward. This did help keep my foot from moving as there was nowhere for it to go, it was just pressed up against the outside of the cage. So after a half hour of listening to Queen through a rubber tube attached to the ear protectors (can't use real headphones because of the car-sized magnet in the room I guess), I was free to go, with pins and needles in my foot (from being jammed up against the side of the weird foot cage) and told to expect a letter from whoever they're sending the scans to.

So I learned nothing from that, other than MRI scans are quite boring.

Any results with this ? I have one that looks EXACTLY like that on my forearm (Mine is in the center of a huge group of varicose veins that makes up almost my entire forearm. My ball of veins is about the size of yours maybe a little bit bigger and I get told the same thing "I've never seen anything like that !" However, underneath mine there seems to be a cyst, it's very hard like the tip of a pencil. I've had my huge veins for approximately 10 years or so. Lemme know

I went to the doctor yesterday for a lump on my foot, in the 10 minutes i was in there he said strange 8 times, and told me he'd never seen it before and it was weird.
he thinks it is an aneurysm and i have to go get an ultrasound on it-but have to wait a week. my lump is absolutely killing me though! did yours hurt at all? how did you stop it from hurting?

no pain with mine, not at all. I've been wearing an elastic support bandage on my foot for a while now though, to keep it squished. I really must get back and find out what's going on. I'm a bit lazy you see.

I've had a small anuerysm (size of a small pea) at the junction of the third toe for many years that just tripled in size overnight (literally). It has been stable at that size for 2 days now or I would have done something about it. I never worried about it before, but am a bit concerned now.
Your post is one of the few places I could find any information or experience with this issue. What was your outcome? What were the medical concerns? How big of a deal is it?

Parts of your body suddenly getting bigger is usually a bad sign (well unless it's that particular bit of your body).

@TS269: It could be nothing, but you should seriously go see a doctor.

I'm getting it removed (cut out) some time after my summer holiday. The procedure seems straight forward, they cut out the damaged bit of vein and tie up the two loose ends, the blood then finds a different route to wherever it's going to. They do it all the time with leg veins.

It's hard for me to tell if the size has changed any because I look at it all the time, but Helen (my GF) assures me that it hasn't changed.

Sorted. Operation yesterday, was under for a couple of hours, currently though, as a side effect of being intubated, my throat hurts more than my foot! Helen suggested that the pain was just displaced and my brain assumes that my throat is more important than my foot. Either way, my foot is still covered in pink dye, which looks like it's been scalded.

For all three operations I've had in my life, I had a sore throat everytime. It must be due to the hospital having a dry environment.

Glad you got it sorted Bud.

I would have guessed something to do with them shoving a plastic tube down your throat

Some time in the next day or two, I'll discover how well I handle looking at wounds when changing the dressing

Would have had another photo update, but my phone camera is really struggling to get a good quality photo. Perhaps its the poor light, maybe it's because I've tried out about a million firmwares on my phone and the latest one can't work the camera very well. either way, it's not much more than a red line now it still feels a little swollen underneath, but it's not uncomfortable.
