I'm in two minds about the shield mechanic.

On the one hand, nice mechanic of it rebuilding over time.
On the other hand, you'd end up having to constantly look away from the gameplay to check your shield.

I wonder if there'd be a better way of doing that..?
A circle around the ship to represent the shield? Full circle for full shield, semi-circle for half shield, etc.

Games like Gaiares and Gradius have visual indicators.
They would probably be better in that case.

Depending on my finances I may pick it up in cart form.
It is an excellent looking game in my favorite genre on one of my favorite consoles.
