Has anyone ever used this engine?

Not for very long, and it was a long while ago.

How are the graphics compared to B3D?

In a word, I would say yes, but it really depends on the artwork used more than anything, but in general it supports more modern features like shadows and scene management, so it has the potential for better graphics and performance than Blitz3D. The best way to see is to download it; it comes with a couple dozen compiled examples to look at, and you would want to focus on the main demo example. The main drawback with Irrlicht is that it is primarily a graphics engine. No physics (except maybe basic), networking, or sound. You have to use other software for those (there is an IrrSound or something like that). It is free, so I would recommend just getting it and trying it out to see if you like it. Another free option to look at would be Ogre3D, which is somewhat more powerful and feature rich than irrlicht, but I believe Irrlicht is easier to use. Both are extremely popular free solutions (Ogre more so than Irrlicht), and are probably the most highly recommended free engines available.

I would say just to download at least Irrlicht, and maybe Ogre3D, and try them out (they both come with examples). They are free, and if you don't like either of them, then you haven't lost much except some time.

Thanks for the information.

I was hoping that there was an alternative to B3D.
