Just in time for Socoder's 2nd birthday (how nice of them!) Google have announced they'll be launching their own browser...

Tonight! (/tomorrow, depending on the time of day it is when you read this!)

Wootsocks!

It'll only be a "testing" version, but.. hey, isn't that true for Everything Google!?

Blogoscoped's getting fooked with links, so here's a link to Google's own blog instead.

OMG!

Damn, I'm excited. But also torn - it's Firefox vs Google!

I hope though that plugins will be easier to write in Google's Chrome - restarting firefox every time is too painful

I've already got the full version of this, it's called 'Opera'. Seriously though I think this could hit FireFox quite hard. Google won't be supporting FF so heavily once they have their own browser (or at all) especially since they won't be distributing it anymore with the Google pack which (which these days is provided on a lot of machines you buy).

Unlike Opera, this might end up with >1% market share though

But I'm sure the firefox devs still have some tricks left. I know they're doing a lot of work porting the firefox canvas engine to Internet Explorer through ActiveX and I think I heard somewhere that they had a deal done (or were thinking about it) with Adobe to distribute the plugin with every flash download. There's also talk about them porting the firefox javascript engine over too. And in ffx 3.1 Ogg Vorbis (audio) and Ogg Theora (video) are going to be implemented natively - which is important because wikipedia only hosts audio and video in these formats and are going to be adding a lot more video

But google could really push their browser better than anyone else could - which would be great. We need to finally kill off IE6!

Microsoft are headed in the right direction with IE8, but there's still no Canvas or proper XHTML support.

For the record, I am a proud user of IE 6.

It's available for download now |edit| Actually, I'm using it right now. |edit|

I am a displeased user of IE 6.

I think there was a typo in your post.

Ye gods, I thought firefox 3 was fast!

I'm not so keen on the non-native gui though. And of course AdBlock Plus, FlashBlock and Faviconize Tabs are sorely missed too

And, the annoying shrinkage of Firefox 3 no longer occurs
!!!YEAY!!!

However..
Dum-dum-durrr
There are adverts EVERYWHERE on the net!
Man... I can't believe how many there are!

(No adverts on Socoder, unless you count that little .co.nr icon thing!)

HEY! You can rescale the text input box!

1. Installation is nice and quick, nice and easy, and isn't even an .exe! strange!
2. It took the bookmarks, passwords, and what have you, from Firefox, meaning I didn't have to play "Oh, nuts, what was my Socoder password, this time..?" again.. (Had to click "Login" but, not guess the password!)
3. No need to install Flash + co, it's already in there. (Although that might've been nicked from Firefox, too..)

4. Wow, it is fast, isn't it!

Download

OK, I've added onFocus="this.select()" to codeboxes.

In Firefox, left click, Ctrl-C.. Or Right click, copy.
In IE, left click, Ctrl-C.. or Right click, copy.
In Google Chrome, Right click, copy.

Either way, it's at least better than using Ctrl-A and getting the whole site highlighted!

This browser is insanely fast and really clean looking.

I'm switching. Sorry Firefox.

To be honest, I think I'll leave it for a bit before downloading Chrome, simply because I hate having lots of programs that do the same thing, and constantly switching between them. I'm used to Firefox, so I'll stick with it for the moment. Maybe once Chrome is out of beta (and releasing on time) then I'll try it, simply because Google will probably own the internet by then. Meh.

Took at look at Chrome, it was OK but nothing amazing. It's cool and all, don't get me wrong, but until i see some whiz-bang 'change my view' stuff, Im just keeping with firefox, screw it.

I think Google are taking over the world... or at least the internet. Satellites, Phones and even a web browser, makes you wonder

What I hate the most about it is actually that I can't middle click on a page and have that scroll marker appear. I always use that in Firefox.

And, I'm with Mog. It seems like a cool browser, but at the moment Firefox offers more.

Yeah I third that Mog. It is insanely fast. But its only that fast because its bare bones right now.

I'll be using both.

Although Google's not quite 100% yet, it is REALLY REALLY REALLY quick at loading!

How often have you closed the browser, and then gone "Oh, FFS, meant to check my mail" or something.. Well, now I can open super-quick Google and have a quick nosey.
Sorted!

Often, but Vista's superfetch speeds up the start up time for most browsers. FF starts up instantly on my desktop.

Another thing worth noteing is it's stability. Very stable.

So Much For Isolated Tabs/Processes!

Still though, I think Chrome will replace my Opera quick launch shortcut - as Jay said, it's quicker than opening firefox just to have a google or something.
