Socoder -> On Topic -> 'Volatile' Links in the Link Archive?

I was thinking about it, and sometimes posting links in the link archive doesn't make sense when it comes to posting News links, since a lot of them involve material that changes, and often becomes irrelevant after only mere weeks.

Because of this, I was thinking maybe we could have some kind of "volatile" tag or something, or a specific News section that just takes in rolling updates of news, which regularly expires and gets deleted off the SQL. Might make for an interesting feed on the homepage~~

Sounds like a good enough suggestion, although if folk could add "Here's where you could probably cram it in, without the frontpage getting any sillier" whenever they add suggestions for the homepage, that'd be handy!

I'll.. get to that later! Plenty to do right now!
If you don't see that pop up in a few weeks, remind me, 'cos I've probably forgotten.

I think two better alternatives would be:

1) A broken link report button on the link posts.
2) A new 'News Archive' section where the news can be posted.

The news that people posted could also be displayed on the front page, like a news site.

We used to have news on the frontpage, but Jay removed 'em because he wasn't happy with that section.. or something.

Yeah, Afr0's right.

"News" is one thing, "Site News" is another.. Site News should be on the frontpage, and ..well.. there's never any site news! That's why I got rid of it in the first place.

Newsletter, and the links sidebar does all that's required, really.. I mean, consider that when you post news to the links archive, it gets repeated on the sidebar over every single page of the site.
Surely that's good enough, isn't it!?

Jay got rid of site news because there wasn't any. But people post plenty of news news. I'm suggesting we bring back the site news, but have it as news news.

This would solve Instincts old Link News issue.

But, again, what makes it frontpage worthy?
Frontpage = Site, not "random crap from all over the internet"

If you post news, it's in the sidebar. Isn't that enough?

I think it's fine if its just in the sidebar.

There's already a few "News" areas in the links. I'll add some more, and probably a "Old News" section, too. Then I'll tweak the database to throw the News into the Old News after.. say.. maybe a month or so?! *shrugs*

Not yet though, working on other stuff..

With regards to the screenshot, I thought you said placing the logged in user's name on the screen was stupid/annoying.

I like the new layout though, not the way it looks, but rather the riddance of the extra column. You could trim the menu by one more item by stripping away the 'Home' link, since it's already there by clicking the logo. It also hits me that it's a bit odd to have two menus, so if I got to choose we'd place all of the menu links at the top in drop down menus.

Gamedev.net has gamedevelopment related news from all over the internet on their frontpage. Seems to work fine for them.

I do think that.. That's why I turned it into a randomly changing link that says "HELLO!" and "SETTINGS" and "Profiles" and "your name is .." and "insert name here" and other stupid things.. It's just a link to your profile, that's all it really ever needs to be.

...I might stop the sillyness later, and just have it say "profile"
For now, since it's still mostly broken, it stays as a silly button.

|edit| And don't compare us to GameDev. Have you ever read their newsletter? It's about 99% Internet, and 1% Gamedev! True, our's isn't 100% Socoder, but at least I try! |edit|

Nobody is saying you don't try Jay, you do more for this site then most admins do for theirs. That's why we suggest so many improvements, cos they might actually happen!

I'm glad that our front page isn't polluted with news from everywhere, like in the daily GameDev.net. The only good bit about the GD news is that I pick up a new word every once in a while.
