Socoder -> Web Development -> A School Website

I am starting a project for my school. Its not affilated with my school or anything. Its a website where students of the school can come and talk to each other, share current news, clubs can talk, etc. I already got a domain for the website (www.chstalk.com). So what I am asking is what should I do for this site. It has wide possabilitys here. In the profile I have decided you can write a bio of yourself and you can mark your grade level and check clubs and sports your in. Also I am thinking about an IP block from our school computers so students dont access the site from the school (not that I could get in trouble if they access the site but it will earn some brownie points with the school and keep the site and the school not hating each other). I only have one brain to think with and I know if I get some input I can really get this to work. Privicy is an issue too. I dont want students giving out to much info, but just enough for them to know who each other are. I dont know if bandwidth is an issue. If 1,000 students use the site (I wish) thats 250MB per student. Plenty in my opinion. So features, ideas, comments?

Thanks you guys!

EDIT:
I should probably point out that I am using PHP and MySQL.

Im thinking the site will look like this. (I know, kinda similar to this site.)

For a minute there, I thought it said Ch Stalk!

Oh well, a possible advertising point there if your target is students, eh?

i had an idea like that once, but decided i didnt like my school enough to do that. there is a thing called facebook wich is pretty much that just on a wider basis, and in my opinion is stupid. but the guy that made that is rich.

i pretty much hated every school i went too, this home school system not so much but still not enough to make a site for

a lot of them are real idiots. one guy that was a grade above me asked for them with fractions, come on they are not that hard

well it could be that i am a lot better at math then most people in the states, i hate the states so much

i want to move to the UK or japan, either way i have to learn another language or 2

Well this is more personal than facebook. And lets face it, MySpace is slow and unstable. I hope that the personalness for our school will attract students. And there wont be any stalking HoboBen. Thats a definate priority. But a concern is that school administrators might create accounts to talk to students and get information out of them and such. Not quit sure how I am going to combat that yet.

you will have to have every person give you confirmation of who they are at school when they regeister at the site

That would be a huge hassle. I guess I might just have to deal with the administrators creating accounts.

I don't see what the problem is - what information could this possibly be that could be leaked with such bad effect?

Anyway, I use bebo.com, never tried MySpace. Maybe you should check bebo out, it's a good way to connect with your school mates and you could pinch a few ideas too.

you could just delete the administators accounts....? and why would the teachers and stuff get on there in the first place, why would they care.

Our administrators have done it with MySpace. The problem magicman is that there not going to anounce themselfs as administrators. And I dont exactly want these "fake students" roaming around asking about fights and school stuff. And if a student said so and so teacher sucks I dont want the school jumping on the student for saying that.

well they can't use any of thing of what a kid says on an unoffical site against them becuase it is out of their power

also if someone where to get a detention for that they can sue the school, it will work because if the fatsos that sued mcdonalds for making them fat when they knew that it can't be healthy for you got money then this will work

Besides, main point being, nearly everyone has got a myspace/livejournal/whatever already, so if they were that intent on getting people in trouble they'd just go to one of those established sites.

Our school has been known to create xanga and myspace accounts to spy in on students. Thats the only reason its a concern for me.

Wow... That sounds perverted.

Does your school hire the thought police often?

Yeah I am not quite sure there ben. Well ok if a students grades are slipping then they will do a search on MySpace and Xanga to get there profile. Then they try to see if its a family or personal issue. They like to fix problems. It gets a little invasive sometimes when the school does that.

I'm not sure, but they do it.

quite legal. They're just making a myspace page and happen to be searching for kids at the school. There is no law against that, and its not against the TOS of myspace, so its gravy.

and the 14 year olds that join don't? myspace is a joke, no one should be using it, and if someone is dumb enough to post something that the school could potentially use against them, then its their fault, and too bad.
