New 3DS/3DS XL incoming - Linkage

Unsure. I probably wouldn't bother. If I didn't have a 3DS, then the extra battery life might help sway me, but.. I already have one, and there's nothing majorly new for me.

I probably will as the extra size of the XL might help with puzzle games like PicrossE... The later levels are almost impossible to complete without a single mistake due to tiny little cells.

The extra analogue controller might also be very useful in games to come.

I haven't had a new toy since my Vita and I love the 3DS - I use it every single day to do the StreetPass stuff and play Picross (E and 3D), Layton and other puzzle games.

So yeah, I'll probably get it.

I never saw the point of the circle pad pro, now nintendo have bowed to the "you can't have fps without 2 analog sticks" rants of the minority. Now this. I for one don't want it, not to mention the exclusive games that will come, remember how poorly the dsi was supported...

Nintendo has stated that they aren't just catering to the casual, family gamer anymore (like they ever did really?). They want a slice of hardcore and that means adult orientated games like FPS. And that gives extra options to gamers. And that's not a bad thing. Even if no new software is produced for it, there's still a wealth of 3DS and DS games that'll still work. I know that's not the point, but it's not a new machine, just an updated one.

The extra analogue stick won't cater specifically to FPS's though - it can be used for anything from camera movement to two player games on the same 3DS to whatever else Nintendo comes up with. It's just another option.

Millions happily buy every new (more expensive than 3DS) iteration of iPad/iPhone/Android tab/phone every year - a newer, faster and updated console every few years doesn't seem like too bad a deal to me.

If buying an extra/new machine means Nintendo stay around for longer, doing what they do, then I'm happy to purchase. A gaming world without Nintendo and it's games is a dead one to me.

But if its 'better' in ANY way than the 3DS, then it should surely be marketed as a new device. It's going to confuse a hell of a lot of potential customers into NOT buying it, just like the DSi did. Just look how badly they marketed the WiiU, most of their potential customers just thought it was a controller add-on for the Wii.
I can see there bing only five or six exclusive games that actually use the new hardware properly, causing it to be classified as another failure.

Thing is, there'd be a bigger uproar if they released it as a completely brand new machine and I understand what they're doing - why bring in a new system with these features if producers don't make games that facilitate them. Better to play it safe.

I like it this way - doesn't alienate old users or people that have recently bought into 3DS or 2DS, which only came out in December(?) last year.

Nintendo constantly bring out new revisions of their machines a year or two apart, so this is long over-due (and something I expected two years ago). Plus they release Special Editions all the time, which sell like hotcakes. They aren't losing anything with this machine and potentially could gain a massive load of new fans as devs produce little console versions of big console games.

This machine will be wanting for nothing with regard to control. The extra CPU power, larger battery and better 3D screen are all good too.

Sure, it's not for everyone, but it's all good - whether you buy into it or not. It's not a forced upgrade or even a necessary machine, but the possibilities for what it could offer are limitless.

As for it being a failure - time will tell.

DS was a failure when announced. So was Wii. So was 3DS. All went on to break all previous console records in their respected fields.

5 or 6 games that make good use of the controls IMHO would be a success.

Does it still phone home when it detects WiFi it can connect to, send Nintendo all your pics and usage logs, and wait for a remote command from Nintendo to brick itself if they don't like how you use it?
Yes?
Then Nintendo can go fuck themselves. They won't be selling any damned hardware to anyone with half a brain's worth of concern over privacy or ownership rights.

Like every system that you ever use you mean? Like local councils selling your details, or your phone company, or your utilities companies? Walking down the street you're viewed on CCTV. Your supermarket follows your purchases with your loyalty and debit cards, your ISP follows your every move online, every time you make an online purchase your information is viewed by Amazon, eBay etc. etc. and they use information to target advertise you (at the very least) etc. Facebook, Twitter, Google etc. all gathering info. Your Tivo/SKY/Virgin/whatever package you have details what you watch and for how long etc. etc. etc.

Stop with the fucking paranoia. Nintendo have never killed/bricked anyone's 3DS (that I'm aware of) as a result of piracy or improper use. I've used a flashcard on my 3DS without any ill effects. Sure they could, but then so could Apple, M$ and every other hardware manufacturer if they wished.

You don't have to update your 3DS via the internet and you can turn off the wifi (it doesn't magically turn itself on either).

If you don't like your privcacy being invaded then I'm you're living in the wrong century. There's not a lot you can do about it. Shunning one gaming system isn't going to make a whole lot of difference in the grand scheme of things. Wherever you are and whatever you're doing big brother is watching anyway. Get over it. Have you not being watching the news? Your privacy rights are nil and non-existent. The governments have decreed that quite clearly.

|edit| Forgot to add GPS tracking via your mobile/cell phone. I've probably forgotten, ignored or am unaware of millions of other legal "privacy" violations too, but you get my point.

a) Nobody's* viewing your photos without your consent but Nintendo. If it were widely known, the device would be banned in the States. We don't put up with that kind of shenanigans.

b) Some things you can't control, but most of what you've listed doesn't apply to me. Perhaps you can't stop the apocalypse, but it seems pretty stupid to embrace it.

*nobody non-government, anyhow

Do you actually have proof that images are being viewed by Nintendo (and or other parties) other than what you might have read on the internet (which as you know is entirely made up of 110% believable stuff and 75% cats) - and if so, why aren't you letting your government know about it?

There are far worse things going on in this world that could bring on the apocolypse - I don't embrace any of them but they're still there and there's nought I can do about them either. I guess in the grand scheme of things playing on a 3DS isn't my biggest privacy or apocolyptic concern. And I don't use the 3DS camera either so Nintendo isn't viewing my photos!

Who can prove that one way or another?
Could be Ninendo employees wanking it to sexy selfies, could be nobody's ever bothered to look at one.
All I know is the photos are among the data collected and sent .

The 3DS crap is just more of a lengthening series of anti-consumer decisions by Nintendo. The DS already lost my business when they pulled the GBA/expansion slot. The best games in the DS library are...or were... GBA games. And how do you play Guitar Hero On Tour with no guitar buttons?
Then they pulled GameCube compatibility from the Wii. OK, maybe the reduction in manufacturing costs was justifiable - but what about games that "update" the OS of GC-playing Wii's to kill GC capability? That's just bullshit. 3rd party? Mistake? Come on, Nintendo, if you're going to pull shit at least own it.
Then they kill the DS online shop for the DSi and kill the DSi shop for the 3DS and kill the Wii shop for the WiiU and nothing is transferable or upgradeable so why would anyone sane buy any of it?
And then the 3DS shenanigans.
I haven't even looked into what they're pulling with the WiiU - it's bad enough to me already that all the "pack in" games are downloads they will kill in a few years.
But I certainly don't trust Nintendo any farther than I can throw them, and I won't be buying their hardware until they show some sign of reversing these trends.

Right now the only "big 3" hardware I'd even consider buying is SONY - and that's saying a lot considering some of the shit they've pulled in the past (rootkits, anyone?)
But at least they've got a category of downloadable software that works on 5 of their units and some mobile phones as well.

Backwards compatibility is a relatively new concept. The fact that Nintendo even considered making the DS play GBA games was a bonus and not designed to be the main selling point. If you have an issue with the quality of DS games compared to GBA games, then simple sell your DS and buy a GBA. Same goes for Wii/U.

Can you prove that you're personal photos aren't part of the analytics uploaded by your smart phone, pc or other games console? Nintendo aren't the only ones wo remove features for cost saving or just plain redundancy. Remember the big fuss when Sony removed PS2 compatibility from the PS3?
The lifetime of a console usually follows the path of removing the least used features in favour of appealing to a new audience. The 2DS for example, removed the 3D, easing concerns of a lot of parents, resulting in more sales.

Can I prove. Eat me. No I can't prove any of a million other things you could pointlessly list. The point is Nintendo *DOES* take your photos (if any) and this is frowned upon. It is still frowned upon whether or not someone else manages to do it without you knowing.

They didn't just kill backwards compatibility when they killed the DS expansion slot - they also killed a good dozen or so games that relied on it and other features. It did not result in a better product OR a cost reduction since they added superfluous features that nobody really used.

Again, what excuse for crippling GC-playing Wiis into non-GC-playing Wii's?

As for the digital software if there's no backward/forward compatibility there should at least be an archive you can re-download from and the ability to transfer your games to a different console when yours breaks.

Aslo, how it's always been done is no excuse when it's always been done wrong.

Also, a final note: I'm pretty sure I've made my points repeatedly clear, so I'm not coming back to defend my stance against additional strawmanning.

I'm pretty sure I've made my points repeatedly clear,

No you haven't. You've stated something repeatedly without any shred of evidence to back up your claim.

Changing the subject to the removal of backwards compatibility doesn't make what you've said any more true.

Besides, backwards compatibility is not a right. Technology moves on and old stuff gets sidelined - it's a fact of life. I'd rather the costs of new machines were reduced by not having old dated tech (or worse emulation) within them that pushes up the cost just for the sake of having it.

Nintendo gave early 3DS adopters, like myself, 20 games covering NES, GB and GBA - they've all sat on my memory card since I got them, never played and likely never to be played. I enjoy some old games from time to time but for the most part I'm more than happy to play new stuff. I have a GBA and old DS that are ignore, because I no longer want to play (m)any games on those systems. Same goes for the other consoles I have, ranging from MegaDrive and up.

As for privacy issues (let's just go back to that) just last week SONY and Microsoft had data stolen. So, yeah, your privacy is safe with them too..

Oh, FFS. It's not that hard to verify.

Boom. There ya go. "We take your photos." Stated by Nintendo themselves.

And, yes, that would indemnify them if it were a device primarily used by adults and targeted at adults, but it's considered dodgy when slipped under the radar and targeted at children.

Actually it states -

Some types of information you may provide include:

...

Messages, photos, videos, drawings, audio recordings and other information shared by you through the interactive features of our products and services;

My Bolding

meaning they MAY only use photos that you have specifically sent via THEIR online service. They don't TAKE your photos from your 3DS as you claim.

This is standard protocol for pretty much EVERY internet, mobile or telephone service ever.

So nothing new and nothing for you to be so paranoid about.

I just found out how the 'better 3D' works. Must say I'm less impressed with the idea than I was before. It apparently uses face tracking to adjust the screen output. Sounds good in theory, but I've tried using games that use face tracking for camera work or even gameplay mechanics and it fails 90% of the time.

Hmm, not so keen on that idea.
Given that my 3DS can barely ever manage to do it's "Your face as a Mii" without whinging that I don't have a face, that doesn't seem particularly viable.
Plus, late night playing in the dark would be practically impossible..

Hmmm...

I'll still have it turned off, no matter how good it is.

TBF the 3D effect can be quite nice in some games, but most don't actually benefit or compel me to use it.

Surely some of the CPU power will be used tracking the player constantly? I'd rather that extra oomph was used in-game.

Yeah, the 3D is pretty much permanently off on mine.. Only occasionally switched on when noseying at things in Animal Crossing, and going "oooh, that looks nice, in 3D!"
... I'll be honest.. I'm really excited about Smash Bros Trophies!!!
